Part 45: 11 legendary weapons, 1 bunk

Chapter 42: 11 legendary weapons, 1 bunk

So, it's time to trek back across the Guardian Tree's little grove.

Once there, Hiryuu drops off Lenna's unconscious body.

Lenna!

Either she's having an existential moment or she's possessed. Since Lenna has the depth of a piece of paper...

She's possessed by one of the fearsome monsters sealed within the Rift!

Lenna uses a red filter to attack the party!

Ghk...
Lenna...stop, please...
Lenna...
Mwa-hahahaha! Face destruction at your friend's hands! Mwa-ha-ha... Now, watch as I take care of a turtle infestation!

Exdeath voids the Library, killing a bunch of scholars and Ghido (a named character, so he matters!) and destroying Mana's Paean if you missed it.

Soon...very soon! The power of the Void will completely be mine, and the entire world will kneel before me! Mwa-hahahahahahaha!!!

When things look their most grim, Hiryuu flings itself at Lenna, at the cost of his life!

This involves 14 teraliters of life energy, so of course the demon's expelled!

BOSS FIGHT: MELUSINE

Mel here is a whore. She switches elemental weaknesses constantly and casts ~aga magic so wildly there's practically no way to tell which element she's open to at any moment except to guess. She absorbs the elements she's not weak to and switches weaknesses far too quickly to eliminate the ones she's not using. Her defense is obscenely high unless she's magically immune suddenly.

So I say fuck her. The Blood Sword, by virtue of its draining effect, deals magical damage. Krile sucks 2000 HP out of her a round using !Rapidfire. If she's in her magic-immune barrier, Burtz jabs her with his lance.

Reflect Rings and the elemental stuff I've picked up, when paired with Golem for physicals, neutralizes her damage output.

So, fuck you, Mel. I completely ignored your gimmick because I hate you.

...I should explain my hatred I guess. When I did my Blue Mage game, it took like 30 minutes to beat her 'cause she changes weaknesses randomly at random times and 1,000 needles was out 'since I needed !Control to get it. Ever since, I've felt nothing but enmity for her.

Lenna, despite having her castle flung out of this plane of reality and a dragon divebomb her, is still fine.

Fine is relative, I guess.

Finally, after so long, my airship...

I accidentally fly into the Rift before I intend to go there nearly every time I play this game.

The airship flies by itself and the screen fades. Plot time!

Power of the Void! Reveal your true self! Go forth and destroy everything! Show how absolute your power really is!!!

Exdeath destroys Walse!

He obliterates Istory!

All the towns are being sucked into the Void!
Exdeath! Stop!!!

He ends the Moogle Village!

And, as if to insult Burtz personally...

He levels Lix...

It's awful...
Even a tiny place like Burtz's Hometown, Lix...
That... To go that far is....

Burtz, overcome with rage, forgets his fear of heights and pushes the airship to the extreme, encircling the globe several times before...

...Burtz calms down. This somber tune, ironically, announces the best part of the game, the merged worlds.

Kuzar Castle had a real purpose besides Shield Dragons. Who would've guessed?

Speaking of which, there's a new monster here. Exdeath's Soul is a repeatable source of Dark Matter, but his Reaper's Sword (which inflicts damage AND death) puts an unneeded risk on it.

In this chamber, the twelve legendary weapons are stored.

The tablet tells us that we can only get three of the twelve with each tablet. So, let's take a look at each one!

It's worth noting that physical attacks are finally out of their awkward period. From this point on, !Rapidfire will deal more and more damage, with everything else being accessories.

Knightsword, holy-element. 110 attack with a vigor bonus. Perfect for smacking things.

Though it's a bit lame compared, 87 attack for any class is respectable. The instant death effect is rare, but handy against non-undead enemies. If you use a weapon with an instant death effect on an undead, the death effect always works... and revives that enemy with full HP.

99 attack, a point of agility, and the Main Gauche's blocking effect. It's for Ninjas only, but, hey, who cares when Freelancers equip everything?

Slightly weaker than the Excalibur in almost every way; 109 attack, smaller vigor boost, except it carries the jump bonus. Not terrible in the slightest and a welcome sight to Dragoons; it's twice as strong as the Heavy Spear Burtz has been wielding.

Rune weapons consume MP to increase power a bit. The Rune Axe is terrible because Berserkers are terrible. 71 power is crummy when the Excalibur has more power without a cost and the +3 magic is useless on an Axe. There's a better weapon in practically every situation.

107 power, a high critical rate like all katanas, and it carries an effect that makes the user have full ATB at the start of a battle, and it can be used as an item to cast Haste. The Masamune is an awesome weapon for awesome dudes.

Yoichi's Bow has 101 power and gives 3 strength and agility. Nothing fancy, just a dandy bow.

82 power, +2 agility and power. The Fire Lash casts Firaga when attacking sometimes. I think it's interesting.

Strong against undead like Aqua Rake is against desert monsters(which I assume means murderizing), magical in damage type(as it uses the same attack I.D. as a spell), with 45 power. More awesomely, it boosts Holy damage. Holy will become one of the best spells for single targets.

Completely worthless as a weapon, the Magus Rod boosts Earth, Wind, Poison, Lightning, Fire, and Ice damage. At the same time. Lenna carries around 5 of these at any given moment, and switching rods is cumbersome.

It casts a spell that, unlike other harps, doesn't deal percentile damage. Instead, it deals raw damage. A shitload of raw damage against Dragons and Undead. This and the world 3 spells bring bards from 'anti-undead and nothing else' to 'useful in some situations.'

The Gaia Bell is the least useful of the lot. It, one fourth of the time, casts Quake, which is somewhat more powerful than Titan. Unlike the Fire Lash, though, the Gaia Bells sucks as a weapon.

I take the Magus Rod, Excalibur, and Masamaune, as they are the best.

Exdeath doesn't like that Burtz is getting good weapons, so he sends some demons at him.

He sends 3 of the 10 dudes that appear to do the job. The other 7 are bosses in the Rift.

Here's the world 3 map. It's an hybrid of Burtz's and Galuf's worlds. The points of interest lie in some unlocked doors and overlapping locations.

NEXT TIME:
Awesome, unstoppable power!
