Part 23: Job Talk S2 - Floral Fallal, Machina Maw

Job Talk S2

Floral Fallal

Of the three Special Dresspheres, Yuna's is probably the most defense-oriented. Most of her abilities cost no MP, and party healing and buffs make it easy to double your defensive power. Floral Fallal is also a good choice for enemies with strong physical defense but a susceptibility to magic.

three random magic attacks on enemy party

twelve random strikes on enemy party

The charge time on these is annoying, but Chain combos and elemental weaknesses can make them really powerful against certain single targets.

nullifies magic damage
nullifies physical damage
restores party's HP
adds regen to party
adds shell to party
adds protect to party
adds reflect to party
adds haste to party
revives dead support units with full HP

These are the abilities that make Yuna a brick wall. Party healing, buffs, and restoration. The healing and restoration are all free and infinitely sustainable, but Floral Fallal doesn't have any MP restoration, so the more overpowering buffs can't be applied as liberally.

magical attack and sleep on enemies
magical attack and berserk on enemies
magical attack and slow on enemies
magical attack and poison on enemies
physical attack and silence and darkness on enemies
physical attack and stop on enemies
physical attack and confusion on enemies
physical attack and petrification on enemies

The primary purpose of status effects is usually to get an enemy to leave you alone while you beat on another, so getting every enemy to leave you alone is actually pretty helpful.

deals 50% of current HP damage to enemies
instant death on one enemy

Most of the enemies you want to use this on will resist it. Come on, you know how this works.

physical attack on one enemy

I don't know why these boring single-target attacks cost AP to learn when you start with party attacks and Floral Fallal's magic is stronger than its physicals.

physical attack and reduces Strength by one level to party
physical attack and reduces Defense by one level to party
physical attack and reduces Magic by one level to party
physical attack and reduces Magic Defense by one level to party

These debuffs work so slowly they're not really worth it.

Machina Maw

Rikku's Special Dressphere, strangely, is even more specialized and aggressive than Paine's. All Machina Maw does is dish out damage and status. Unfortunately, there are two big disadvantages to Maw that require you to think twice before calling it out. The first is the complete dearth of magical damage, which will turn battles against defensively beefy enemies into a slog. The other is that nearly all of Maw's attacks require MP, making you stop to reload all the time.

physical attack and status against one target

Damage and status. That's all this job does. I wish some of these, at least the missile attacks, were multi-hit like Yuna's Whirls; I don't think there's any status attacks in the game that do that, and they could have reused the itty bitty missiles from the Fahrenheit for the animation too.

physical attack against one target
physical attack against one target
physical attack against party
physical attack and delay effect against party
non-elemental attack against all enemies

These are what you'll be reduced to once your MP runs out. Until you earn Break Damage Limit, Vajra isn't as useful as the other two characters' ultimate attacks.

physical attack and reduces Strength by three levels on one target
physical attack and reduces Defense by three levels on one target
physical attack and reduces Magic by three levels on one target
physical attack and reduces Magic Defense by three levels on one target

These actually debuff stats fast enough to be useful, and most bosses are actually vulnerable to at least one of them.

adds haste to party
adds shell to party
adds protect to party
increases target's Strength by three levels
increases target's Defense by three levels

Use haste, else ignore.

restores 25% of max HP to target
restores MP to target
restores dead support unit with 50% HP

Maw's healing resources are limited, being entirely single-target. Along with having to reload, this means you're likely to keep falling behind if you turtle.

they didn't even bother to rename it
