Part 86: Paralogue 19: Irreconcilable Paths - Battle

Paralogue 19 Battle

Gangrel gets immediate action for a mission, while Cynthia comes back from hiatus to join in and stab some fools.

Seal Time

Basilio becomes Berserker number 2 billion and 7 or something, increasing his mediocre speed to a good range. I'm sure he'll miss that 2 resistance though.

Gangrel becomes a Dark Knight, lessening his great speed but gains a horse for his troubles.

I've no use for blind obedience. I need you to face me! I was driven off the path to conquest, and only blood will see me returned to it. Only HIS blood!

So for once, beating Walhart isn't the end of a mission. His recruitment is simple enough, just have Chrom fight him once. Of course, that sounds a lot tougher considering the enemies on the map.

Henry and Nah will take point at taking the initial enemy waves. Olivia gains a level off Dancing in the meantime (+1 HP/Skill/Spd/Lck).

Henry kills off two enemies while slightly weakening a Paladin, gaining B rank tomes.

Nah's just chilling. No one else on the team outside of a couple Dual Guards from Chrom+Lucina can handle that many Risen without dying, let alone barely taking a scratch.

The party hangs back to avoid fighting a large majority of the enemies at once, putting Nah, Henry, and Basilio in range to counter.

Henry's glaring speed flaw is really hampering his ability to tank through the enemy phase, and consider that's after an A-rank support with his son and Rally Spectrum.

Basilio starts off his counterattack nicely by not taking damage in the bout.

So, a lot of things went wrong here. The Risen Paladin hit Basilio on a weak 34% hit. That in turn activated Counter which kills off the enemy, and highlights a big problem with the ability: No EXP gained from Counter killing an enemy. Truly useless to the player.

But fortunately, Basilio kills off 3 more enemies to gain a level after that misfortune.

Henry on the other hand is barely hanging on. He gets some needed speed, but that still only puts him at a very low 24.

Nah weakens a nearby Paladin on the left, letting Yarne take out from max distance with his Longbow.

Noire puts that shiny new A rank bow to use by aiming a barrage of arrows at her target (+1 HP/Str/Skill/Lck).

Gangrel brings some lightning to this storm and makes the Risen's day a little unluckier.

Owain joins in on the kaboom fun, protecting his slow dad from any more attacks (+1 HP/Str/Mag/Lck/Def). Gregor savors one of the few moments of 100% hit he'll see (+2 HP, +1 Str/Skill/Spd).

Poor Cynthia, probably the first to legitimately get Galeforce if she promoted to Dark Flier first. As is now, her EXP gain has only recently gone up at a normal rate.

Some transferring tricks gets enough firepower to down a Risen Paladin.

The gamble pays off, as Lucina activates an Aether to crush the Valkyrie.

Brady Rescues Cynthia as is his duty everytime they're on the field together.

Really wish Lucy was a different class. She's really gaining nothing as a Grandmaster and her EXP gain is the worst on the team.

The team once again hangs back save for Nah.

Suddenly, 9 enemies spawn from the grave and replenishes the battlefield with more zombies. Jeez, why does Walhart keep a grave in his backyard?

Nah being the MVP would be a severe understatement.

Yarne and Basilio start off the new turn with a couple rotting corpses sliced up.

Owain and Noire continue to take advantage of one-way victories.

Gangrel and Chrom get a little duo action going as they eliminate two more enemies.

Brady Rescues Chrom and Gangrel out of the current wave's range.

Six more enemies spawn from the northwest and southeast sides, trying to pincer the group. Thankfully these are the last reinforcements for the map.

Yarne gets the only counterkill for the enemy phase, getting to level 15 (+1 HP/Str/Skill/Lck) and learning Bowfaire (+5 Str when equipped with a bow).

Nah is getting bored.

Noire played the percentage game and spammed arrows at a Paladin enough for Morgan to intervene with his own Brave weapon.

Owain softens up his Paladin target for Nah to chomp its head off.

Robin transfers Lucy to Chrom, then Rally Spectrums the rest of the active Shepherds. Chrom gallops to the small hole on the right that isn't covered by forest.

Basilio continues his revenge on Walhart's estate with another decent level (+1 HP/Str/Skill/Lck/Res).

Morgan gets the last kill for the team before Brady Rescues him and Basilio back to safety. Yarne retreats to Noire's support.

Good thing Chrom's sturdy enough to reduce a weapon triangle disadvantage to dodgy odds.

Never mind.

You snuffed my dreams of conquest... I dare you now to snuff the spark of life within my breast!

Leading a big speech against Owain...that'll work in a different reality.

Owain kills about 4 more Risen to get to level 17.

Chrom and Owain kill about 3 more after that. Very popular today.

The final push commences for the Shepherds.

The sun's already blocked out, so there goes that plan. Noire is boosted by Basilio's Rally Strength which I used for funsies (Noire level: +1 HP/Str/Skill/Spd/Def).

Cynthia takes out a northwest Risen spawn, then Gangrel rides in and transfers Morgan to the front and eliminate the other.

Walhart can do a whole 5 damage! Amazing!

Brady heals the entire party with his Fortify Staff. Chrom hides in a forest and weakens his target.

Brady then Rescues Morgan since he can counterkill Walhart quite easily.

What a silly Great Knight.

Another fried horse gets Owain to level 18.

Good thing Brave can make even Gregor a decent combat unit in the face of mediocre speed. Morgan gains a level off his kill (+1 HP/Str/Skill/Lck).

Alright, let's end this once and for all...the third time...

My heart beats no more... But the flame of life within me refuses to gutter out.

This marks the third and final time our blades will cross!

The war has ended, Walhart! We've no reason left to fight.

We have EVERY reason! A conqueror rules by strength alone. Defeat is death, and I must rise again!

That's utter nonsense! The fell dragon is reborn and plans to destroy this world! If you're really so dead set on battle, then fight at my side!

Such arrogance. This world is mine! I'll suffer no one to harm what is mine, be they man, dragon, or otherwise.

Then let's strike him down together.

If you would claim me, draw your blade and make it so!

*Sigh* Fine! We can fight again... But when I defeat you THIS time, you WILL join my cause!

That was simple. Walhart drops an Energy Drop and Dracoshield.

Eh, sure. We all know the real answer is Nah.

You gave your word, Walhart. Now fight with us.

First I must know how you defeated me. I have never lacked for strength.

No, you're far stronger than me. Even now I think that's true.

...But you stand alone. My own strength is but a fraction of the strength I wield. My allies hone and temper me. They boost my morale and guide my actions.

You tread the path of kings.

What?

You rule by winning hearts. ...I rule by winning battles. We are opposites, you and I. I cannot change. I tread the path of the conqueror, and conquerors walk alone. However, I am curious to see just how far your kingly path can lead you...

*A moment later*

The path of the conqueror...

Milord?

Sorry. Just thinking out loud. You know, honestly I'm a bit jealous of Walhart.

He stands for strength above all things. He has no regrets, no doubts. He's a juggernaut that charges forward and mows down whatever gets in his way.

I'm...not like that. My steps are often plagued with question and worry.

Perhaps such emotions are part and parcel of your path, milord. Not obstacles to it.

How do you mean?

The doubtless man's path is straight, but not always true. A juggernaut does not pause to correct trajectory. It merely presses on. But by stopping, doubting, and occasionally doubling back, you keep a truer course.

I could not serve a conqueror, milord. And I pray you not think prudence a flaw.

...Thank you, Frederick.

Not at all, milord. Shall we, then?

Of course. Forward! ...For now.

Walhart is a strong out-of-the-box unit capable of immediately fighting in the frontlines against Grima. Besides having mastered all the melee weapons and excellent bases, he also comes with Wolf Berg (1-2 range 18 Mt Axe). With a staggering 35 uses, there's very little effort to use him effectively.

The major downsides are his very low skill selection (Luna being the best available) and his support list containing only Robin. He may be the strongest non-children unit, but those two flaws really hold him back in the long run.

Official Bio: The unforgiving man who forged the Valmese Empire. He loathes losers and cowards and sought to unite the world through absolute power. (He's calmed down since. ...A bit.) The most devout vegetarian.
