Front Mission 3

by Smasher Dynamo

Part 126: Mission #58: Zzzzzz....

Two things:

1. Submit more wanzer builds, you bastards! You're not going to get another chance, so do it now before it's too late!

2. Some advice to anyone thinking of doing an LP of a jRPG: don't. It's a completely joyless endeavor.

Mission #58: Zzzzzz....

But first, emails.

Safe?

Are you guys safe? I
guess you're not working
with the rebels anymore.
Are you going back to Japan?

The rebels lost in Shanghai,
but they'll be okay.
They'll reorganize somehow.
The wind of change can't
be held back now.

Mei Ling and I finally
got married. She wants
to thank you guys.

This is Mei Ling.
Thanks to you, I got
my beloved Zhun back.
Thank you so much.
I'll never let him go.
Good luck to you all.

: They're a good couple.
: Yeah, newlyweds.
Too bad they're going to be brutally murdered by the DHZ government for collaborating with the rebels.

Coup

Hello, Kazuki.
I've been investigating
Colonel Takemura, but
I never thought
he'd start a coup.
No statement was made.
Not too many people are
in support of the colonel,
even within the JDF.

Since Tokyo is under strict
control of the JDF and the
police, I'm sure the coup
will not succeed.
The coup forces also didn't
take the JDF Mobile Assault
Force under control. This
may prove fatal.

It's not like Colonel
Takemura to make a mistake
like that. I wonder if
he had a reason to hurry?

There is information regarding
the JDF special mobile force
on their website.
The password is "BLACKI."

Thrilling! But wait, there's more!

Defeat

I heard the rebels were
defeated in Shanghai.
Are you okay, Emma?
What about Kwang?
He chose this life for
himself. Please don't
feel responsible for him.
Please tell me what happened.
I'm ready for any bad news.

: You got mail from Lixian?
: Yes. I don't know how to reply.
: Yeah. We can't lie.

Emma posted:

TITLE
Sorry

I'm sorry. We're
no longer with the rebels.
From what I heard,
Kwang is missing.

I'm sorry I can't
help you. But don't
give up hope.
The rebels are
looking for him.

I have a better message to give Lixian:

There once was a boy named Kwang
Who burst onto the scene with a bang
He brought hope to the cause
Gave the government pause
And now he could not be any more fucking dead. You hear me? He's a fucking corpse!

Anyway, Yun gets an email, too.

Woo posted:

TITLE
Sorry

I'm afraid it's been
arranged that I marry
the daughter of the millionaire
Luis family.
I thought of you,
but I couldn't refuse.
I'll show you the photo
I took for the meeting ceremony.

: Aaarrgh! Who cares if you're getting married!?

Ran Fong posted:

TITLE
Glad

I'm glad you're okay!
Huang and Kwang are
missing. I thought you
might be, too.
We're okay in Guangzhou.

Ling said we don't know
what will happen from now.
Luo said that the locals
weren't very helpful.
But we're still
doing fine.

I hope to help Ling.
Will I see you again soon?

: ...
: A mail from Ran Fong?
: Yeah.
: Hey, if you're worried about Ran Fong...
: Say no more. It's okay.
: All right...

Chang posted:

TITLE
Chang

It's me, Chang.
You guys didn't participate
in the Shanghai invasion.
I couldn't, either.
Luo told me Commander
Huang is dead.
Kwang is missing.

I wonder what will
happen to the rebels
from now on...
Luo is smart, but
she's not commander
material.
But don't worry!

I'll help Luo and
we'll carry on
Commander Huang's legacy.
See ya.

In Japan

I'm in Japan.
The country is very
unstable right now.
But don't worry.
I'll be back.
Then we'll take a vacation.
A long vacation!

Let's go on a Caribbean
Cruise. Where do you
want to go, Susan?

Fun fact: In the year 2112, Cuba is still under an American embargo, and is ruled by a cyborg version of Che Guevara.

: What happened to the forces that got the dispersion order?
: I wouldn't know.
: Yun, can you check?
: Sure thing!
: We must gather our forces together before Sasaki finds out.
: Gotcha! Kumamoto 8th Division is in some place called Mt. Shutenjuju.
: Juju what?
I'm sure that makes more sense in Japanese.
: You meant Mt. Shutendoji.
: Yes, Mt. Shutendoji.
: Why are they so far away?
: They probably realized that Colonel Takemura's orders sounded strange.
: They're waiting for the enemy to make its move.
: The enemy is on the way!
: What!?
: Let's join the 8th Division, then. Okay, Kazuki?
: Sure...
: What's wrong?
: Are you still thinking about Isao?
: Kazuki, now is not the time! Grow up!!
: Alisa's pretty harsh.
: She's Emma's sister, remember?
: You're right, Alisa. I need to think about stopping Sasaki and Lukav. I'm okay now.
: You're no match against your sister.
: You need to lead us!
: Let's go. We can always use more forces.

Quickly, to Mt. PlotPoint!

Oh, come on, game! I mean, if you want to have the main villain of the game make ominous statements, that's one thing, but these are just mid-level goons who both the player and the party knows are being played for fools! Who cares what they have to say?
: They're no fools.
: Say whatever you want. Your 8th Division is almost gone. Those kids can't stop us.
: What kind of deal did you make with Lukav Minaev?
: It's for the military supremacy of our country.
: Don't underestimate Lukav.
: You'll see if he underestimates us!
: Sasaki... Stop the MIDAS project now, or Japan will be destroyed!
: You must not have known; MIDAS was approved by the Japanese Government.
Kind of a non-sequitur, I mean, if Japan is facing destruction from MIDAS, whether the Diet was consulted doesn't make a huge difference.
: You must've used one of your dirty tactics.
: Don't you understand? This is a chance for Japan to become a world leader.
: That's your pipe dream.
: You are a good subordinate, but you're no politician. I regret that you won't be joining us. Kawada, wipe out the 8th Division.
: Yes, sir! What do we do with Takemura's children?
: Leave them be. What can they do?
: But Lukav said to erase them...
: We don't have time for a foreigner's demands. We won't need Lukav once MIDAS is finished.

: Hey, are you sure you have friends here? This place looks like some kind of factory... ! I don't think they trust us...
: Maybe it's because you're here, Ryogo.
: ...

You might remember our old friend Taniyama from the other branch. If you do, you've been spending too much time reading this thread.
: Who's unit...?
: We're not attached to any unit!
: Are you stupid? How can you joke around at a time like this?
: I'm not joking around! I'm serious!
: Would you two cut it out?
: Who are they?
: Commander Taniyama!
: Oh, if it isn't Takiguchi!
: Oh, they're not enemies. I'd like to add them to the 8th division as mercenaries.
We're still mercenaries...and we still don't get paid.
: Allies? I noticed some foreigners among them.
: Do you have something against foreigners as allies?
Well, he's Japanese so....probably.
: Who are you?
: He's Colonel Takemura's son.
: I see, so you're Kazuki... It appears you've got some problems. Let's talk.
Dude, it would take a team of psychologist working around the clock to deal with Kazuki's problems. Hell, you'd need an entire institute dedicated to the subject...the Smasher Dynamo Institute for Kazuki Studies.

: So Lukav is working with Sasaki on the MIDAS project. And you're here to stop them?
: Yes. If we don't, the whole world will be in danger.
: What can we do? Colonel Takemura is being held hostage. We can't do anything rash.
Yeah, I mean, the Japanese Army would like to stop the other faction of the military from taking over the country, but, well, the enemy has their leader, so they're not allowed to do anything. Evidently they're playing by capture-the-flag rules.
: We'll join all of our forces and run Sasaki out of North Kyushu.
: Do you plan on fighting all by yourselves!?
: Lukav is a dangerous man. He will destroy Japan if he has to.
: We need to gather our forces before he does that.
: Okay. I'll trust you.
: Commander Taniyama! We're under attack!!
: Which division is it!?
: It's the 4th Division from Fukuoka!
: From Fukuoka? It must be Tanaka's men.
: Mr. Taniyama, please retreat to Kumamoto!
: Kazuki, what are you saying?
: We can't lose your 8th Division here. We'll take care of everything in here. Just go!
If I understand things right, that means that our party has superior fighting strength to an entire Japanese division.
: You think like your father. All right, I'll retreat.
: Mr. Takiguchi, please take care of Alisa.
: Don't worry.
: The 8th Division will move to Kumamoto Base! The enemy is approaching! Hurry! Kazuki, don't do anything stupid. We'll be waiting for you.
: Thanks! All right. Let's get going!

: Hmph, it's too late to run now! We'll attack them from behind.
: That's impossible. You won't be going any further than this.
: Listen to the boy, and go home!
: What!? Who are you!? Who cares? Destroy them!
You know, that last line basically sums up 90% of the game.

Kazukes, Ryogogo, D-Money and....Linny are up. The enemy is Jinyos and Enyos, so...filler.

Ah, the noble Jinyo, the main grunt unit of both the beginning and end of the game...and it's a pushover no matter when you see it.

Linny commits a war crime by burning a man alive. We'd better beat Lukav, or else Linny's going to The Hague/

Wrong arm, D-Money.

A nice grouping by Ryogo. Oh, I have two missile launchers in this mission, but don't fire a single missile.

At this point, I might as well accept that Linny is never going to be good at anything.

Another named character bites the dust. This guy's name was Tanaka. I kind of want to make a Tonka Tough joke, but I feel like Tanaka's not really that close to Tonka.

Linny manages to kill an enemy. I guess even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

Hmmm....I actually had Kazuki get out of his wanzer and pistol shoot the enemy into submission. I'm not sure why I went to the trouble, to be honest.

And Dennis captures another Enyo.

Good enough. No one really had a good mission, so I guess I'll give it to Ryogo.

: They made it to Kumamoto in one piece.
: They're pulling back for now. Now's the time to escape.
: Okay, Let's meet up in Kumamoto base.

Next Time: Doom at the Docks!
