Part 37: Working for the Weekend

Chapter 16: Working for the Weekend

QfG2 Manual posted:

Career Paths for the Not-Quite-So-Successful Magic User
Court Jester
Computer Programmer
Corporate Manager

Court Jester
While not as dignified as some of the other occupations, Court Jesters,
Stage Magicians and street entertainers have one thing that makes them the
envy of other professions - an audience. Having someone to appreciate the
subtle spinning of a spell, the incalculable incoherence of your
incantations, or just to laugh at your jokes, is well worth the price you
pay in prestige.

Computer Programmer
Just because you are incompetent at incantations, klutzy at conjurations, or
a dud at divination does not mean you can't work magic. You, too, can have a
successful career in computer programming. Just send away to our Famous
Computer Programmer's Correspondence School for further details.

Corporate Manager
If you prefer the power of the petty bureaucrat - having people constantly
wait upon you, passing down directives on Wednesday which must be completed
by Tuesday, and sitting in an air-conditioned office while less clever Magic
Users are flame-broiling fiends in the hot Summer sun - then the job of
Corporate Manager is for you. Let others do your work for you. Even the
simplest Calm spell is more than sufficient to make friends and influence
people, encouraging those of lesser ability (such as Computer Programmers)
to work long hours of unpaid overtime on your behalf.

What be you doing here?
Practice, what else? Sorry I’m late, but I had a thing to take care of.
You not be here for practice. You know everything I have to teach.
What, really?

Yes, it’s only day 8 and I’ve already maxed out pretty much all the combat stats. I can usually finish training on the second to last day, but using vigor pills really speeds up the process.

Well, I guess I do have other things I could be training. See you around, Uhura.
You show them elementals who’s boss.

Here’s basically what I did for the rest of the day.

Can’t I get some service tonight?
You shall get something better: tonight, my Sheema shall dance for you again.
Oh. Lovely.

Not just the Hero of the North now, huh? I suppose I do like some of the perks involved in heroism.
Surely you earn them well.
And the magic doodads are nice too.

More of this today. However, I did manage to max out both Intelligence and Magic this time around.

That’s right, the red doors aren’t just decoration, they’re practice! The guards don’t travel around the streets, so you can pick locks to your heart’s content. Be warned, though, that training Pick Lock takes far too long, and I needed just about two days and a full bottle of vigor potions to reach 200.

Man, this is great practice. And no damn sheriffs around to catch me, either. Well, this door is played out; guess I should…wait! What’s that noise?

Harpo?

Here’s the last thing I bother training before I realize that it’s going up about as fast as Pick Locks and can be trained much, much easier in the next game.

And here is where my stats will end. Communication is trained by spending money, which I’m really not inclined to do excessively, and sadly there really aren’t any good locations to practice climbing at all, which is why it hasn’t moved. Also, all of my spell experience levels are at 90 or higher.

If it would please
the Hero so,
Then there is that
which he should know.
A simple prize
from Sultan wise,
For deeds of Air,
the land does owe.
You done good, bitch. Now here’s the cash.

For some reason, Omar does not allow you to return the reward. The same commands that would give the money back when Rakeesh is the one handing it out simply don’t work in this case, or else Omar tells you that he doesn’t accept charity.

More money for saving the city, eh? If I weren’t already obscenely wealthy, I’d cackle with glee.

Oh, what the hell. Heeheeheeheeheeheeheeheeheeheeheeheeheeheeheeheehee.

The Hero first faced fire
which was making matters dire,
For the flames he fought were flitting ever higher.
With water first he fought it
and into a lamp he caught it
‘Ere our city of Shapier became our pyre.

The next he faced was Air,
which I’m sure that you’re aware,
Was blustering and blowing here and there.
Before the Winds became our bane
as a fearsome hurricane,
With a bellows then he caught it fair and square.

So let us raise a cheer for the Hero of Shapier,
And remember that our praise is quite sincere,
For in the Quest for Glory as related by this story,
Is a Hero who has saved us from our fear,
Is a Hero who’s a Hero without peer!

Alright, Omar, I see what you’re doing there. I forgive you for guilt-tripping me earlier.

Great, thanks for the heads up. I’m really going to do something this time!

Okay, so it’s not here. Guess that would be too easy.

Not here, either.

Yeah, but where is it? Do you know?
There is a strange thing upon the streets. It is formed of the stone of the city.
As I left where I live this morning, I heard something very large behind me.
That doesn’t help me at all!

I figured it wouldn’t be where the air elemental hit, but I’m running out of locations. Maybe the Fighter’s Plaza?

Yes, but which alleyways? This is a huge city! Agh! I need some time to figure this out.

Where the hell did you come from!?

Note that I didn't really have any trouble finding the earth elemental, even the first time through. I just needed an excuse for Nike to fail once more.
