Prologue

Mystic Square Backstory
Deep in the mountains of an eastern land, the Hakurei shrine was a little
peaceful. Speaking of the Hakurei shrine, there is the shrine maiden, Reimu
Hakurei, who isn't so carefree at the moment.
If you must ask why, it is because there's a constant flow of demons,
although not too much, appearing from their own world, Makai. Thus, Reimu
is obligated to constantly exterminate them, constantly leaving no time for
herself.
Reimu: "It's been a little too strange lately."
Since Reimu felt something strange was occurring, it would be her duty to
investigate it, and so she searched for the source of the demons.
Eventually, Reimu discovered that the demons appeared from "The Cave in
Which the Door to Makai is Said to Be" (yes, that's it) which has existed
since ancient times in the mountains behind the shrine.
Reimu: This is the place. No point in endlessly bashing small fry. I've got
to ram through the front gates and show the ringleader who's boss.
Marisa Kirisame, who was observing this...
Marisa: Hmm, Makai huh, that sounds fun.
Marisa decided to take a little tourism trip, and behind Reimu's back,
made haste to Makai.
Marisa: Oh yeah, how am I supposed to get in? (sweat)
--Meanwhile
Two of the residents of the human world, Mima, the evil spirit, and Yuka,
the youkai, aren't too happy about the fact that demons have barged their
way into the human world.
Mima: Those snobby Makai demons.
Don't they know that the human world is mine?
Yuka: Seems exciting, I've always wanted to go to Makai!
Not sure exactly why, but the two headed for Makai themselves. ...Yeah.

The Hakurei Shrine maiden; has natural spiritual powers, but
never trains. She can attack with spiritual wards and release
magical energy through her spiritual attack. With that and the
power of the Yin-yang orb she hunts youkai.
A very easy-going person. Strange things always happen around
Reimu, but she always enjoys it.
She's very straightforward with her feelings, so Marisa
always teases her.

Summary: Though weak at low power levels, at MAX power, Marisa is the most powerful character in the game.

A normal girl, even though she's a magician. Her personality is somewhat self-confident, but she has the power to back it up.
She's extremely sharp and persistent, but still a child.
Nobody knows what she does all day. She's very hard-working.
She seems to have different behavioural standards than Reimu.

An evil spirit that has been living(?) for very long time.
As she can't remember everything from such a long time, she appears to be enjoying her current days.
She is like the deity (evil deity) of the Shrine by now, but her personality is more human-ish than human.
Yuka Kazami - (The Youkai)

Summary: Excels in having a good range with bombs and regular fire; overall easy to use.

The strongest of the youkai around Hakurei Shrine, but one
can never tell what she's thinking, so she's a very eccentric
and ill-thought-of youkai.
However, she actually seems to be quite sharp-witted...

Mystic Square isn't much different from LLS other than being a generally harder game. It's increased difficulty is largely sourced to its somewhat longer boss battles and more complex bullet patterns, even at lower difficulties.
It's the final game in the PC98 Touhous, and introduces the fourth and final PC98 character who survives the jump into the Windows generation.
To spice things up, and because I don't care all that much for the game, I'm going to play as any character you guys want (not mima since i've got someone who is going to try getting videos of her)... but I'm only going to do one play through of the game. So choose wisely.
