War in the East

by Grey Hunter

Part 9

We look at the recon reports for the week, and see that the enemy continue to throw up more men, but the line is relatively thin. We need to rescue the 3rd Mot. Division, but we also need to eliminate those pocketed units.

The 18th Army move forward, they clear a good portion of the pocket, and advance on Leningrad. As you can see, we are starting to run into some heavily fortified units – 61 defence and 35 to its north, at least we're still planning on bypassing the city then starving the troops out.

16th army moves forwards in a broad sweep, with on unit moving north to free the 3rd Mot. Division with a couple of attacks. The rest of the pocket is removed, and that's nine units and 64,000 men who are no longer a problem.

The 4th Panzer group is low on fuel once more, and can do little more than position themselves for a stronger push north – the strong enemy units that had been south of Ilmen have moved to the Novogrod region, and may make our movements harder.

When looking at these recon reports, please remember that the two panzer units at the front are not actually cut odd, its just hard to get supplies to them.

9th Army swings to the north, taking their place in the line – one unit penetrates twenty kilometres into the lines. Another unit is eliminated and another is cut off from its lines.

4th Army pushes to the south, where there is little opposition, but there is so much land, and the German soldier can only march so far.

the 2nd army moves into the gap between these two mighty armies and widens the gap ready to properly capture all those units that escaped last week.

The 12th Panzer Division detours north to scatter some Russian air units, before turning south and cutting some units off near Vyazma.

3rd Panzer group forms up, ready for some fuel and the orders to move forwards towards Moscow.

2nd Panzer group pushes forward, and this time, I am sure that the pocket will hold, with all the cavalry units that it contains.

Moscow. Now only ninety kilometres to go.

The recon missions in the south show a large open space in front of our units.

First we want to take Kiev.

The enemy seems to be well entrenched and ready for a fight, so I move up an infantry division with a planned attack to see how tough they really are.

The enemy are entrenched, so 6th Army is forced to move more forces in to clear them out. In the end, this takes me three divisions with supporting artillery, but it gets the job done.

The rest of 6th Army crosses the Desna, but walking means they cannot advance that far.

That said, they are in a good position to move northwards to link up with the men of AGC.
The Romanian forces sweep forwards, meeting no resistance except around Odessa.

The 11th Army also marches forwards, they have some heavy fighting around Kirovograd, but that this is the only point on contact along the whole front.

17th Army moves forward, I plan on encircling that enemy group near Cherkassy, so I avoid attacking them, this also give our men some time to rest.
This leaves the 1st Panzer Group.

They don't move far, but far enough to trap another five enemy divisions.

In the north, there is nothing spectacular, the Russians form another line in front of our troops.

In the centre, that large pocket is broken once more, and the Red Army tries to throw up a wall in front of us once more.

The south looks so, so open at the moment.

Our casualties are a bit higher for men this week, but our tank losses are low. The Russians have now lost over two million men in the last eight weeks, but still have more and more men in front of us.

They have, however, been reduced in strength, their maximum numbers are now below four million, and lets hope we can minimize their chances of recovering.

Supply stockpiles at the front continue to drop, but the fatherlands stores increase.

More men ans repaired vehicles are sent back to the front, along with over ten thousand tonnes of ammo – killing all these Russians is taking a lot of bullets.

The factories churn out war materials. Its good to know we're training another 24,000 men a week.

That phallic looking area should shut down soon, when the AGC and AGS join up, but apart from that, we made some nice gains this week, even if we once more failed to pocket the enemies cavalry forces.
There is no data for a historical map this week. Next week, lets see how far we can advance in the south!
