War in the East

by Grey Hunter

Part 55

The Finns make no attacks, as the northern enemy units are well dug in, but towards the south I send many enemy units fleeing.

9th Army moves further south, which allows me to move second army into the Tula area, which should allow me to take out that enemy penetration into my lines.

4th Army makes a few attacks, keeping the pressure up on other parts of the Russian lines.

6th Army pushes back the Russians in its area.

I then move my attentions to the south. I start by using 17th Army to open up any holes I can, as these infantry units are slower, but hit harder and can cross rivers easier.

This area is a real mess, organization wise. And apart from eliminating two divisions and isolating another Tank Corps, the 17th Can do little. So I move onto the Panzer Armies.

2nd and 3rd Panzer Army's slams into the Russian lines, and opens up a few holes – I encircle three more Corps, but I'm not sure I can hold it. I also get many more units across the river.

Then the 1st Panzer army moves, they sweep around, secure a couple of crossing points in the marshland over the Volga. I also threaten the Russians, they will need a massive retreat to save all these units now.

I am able to eliminate another Tank Corps in the south, which will hurt them somewhat.
4th Panzer Army sweeps north east, there seems to be no Russians here to stop my advance.

11th Army, having dealt with Sevastopol, moves out to support the advance.

One out our Lufftwaffe units is sent fleeing on the northern part of the advance.

They also manage to cut off another one of my SS units, the Wiking Division is going to be easy to rescue, but is now low on supplies.

The salient remains, I am able to cut off four more enemy Corps, and may be able to get further movements now that I have more units across the rivers.
The battle is still going to be a hard one though, the terrain here is really against me, here it is with units removed.

So many major rivers.

We have taken out nearly 100,000 more Russians now.

Number on both sides are fairly static at the moment, but one good pocket and I can shatter the Russians.

Replacements come in for the mounting losses – we will soon have lost two million men, at least the Russians have now lost over six million men!

The supply level is still healthy. For that I'm thankful.

And we've taken a huge bite out of the Russian lines once more – remember, Stalingrad is not the objective, its everything to the south, so even if I don't take the city, the Volga was my original objective.
