War in the East

by Grey Hunter

Part 63

The Finns level off their part of the line.

While I push north, making sure I cut the southern rail line this time.

We secure Kalinin and shatter the line north of Moscow. Oh for some tanks up here.

The area in front of Moscow is quiet, but we are still so dam close – I still think Fall Wiess would have worked.

In the 4th Army area, I make two attacks on units sticking out into my lines, and the Russians are forced to retreat, losing near ten thousand men from these two attacks alone!

6th Army exploits a sudden gap in the Russian lines, and moves across the Don in force.

3rd Panzer army sweeps forwards, and thirteen enemy units, mainly Brigade strength, are trapped behind my forces.

I also eliminate another Tank Corps.

And us the SS to clear another pocket of 15,000 Russians.

I push north on both sides of what becomes a salient, but I expect the Russians to fall back once more.

I also push forwards and try another encirclement, but come short by one hex.

I'm not pushing much further east, there is little point.

I maintain my stranglehold on the south.

I do cut off the few units in between this and the south, I should be able to clean them up nicely. I also continue to try and open a breach to Biak.

I continue to pressure the other units in the south, their all played out, but I lack strength to shatter them as well.

I don't make much movement in the other end, the mountains make for slow going.

One attack this week, where the Russians find our forces weak.

We maintain our hold on those units, and can get to work on eliminating them next week.

The 1st Panzer Division is cut off, but only slightly so.

Reaching the sea in two places gives us masses of land.

Only 77,000 casualties for the Russians this week, but we have a good number of them trapped.

This keeps their numbers at 5.3 Million men.

230,000 men replaced this week. We're getting better at getting the wounded back to the lines.

Fuel supplies are dropping rapidly, I think this operation will come to an end soon, and I shall have to organise my lines for winter.

It does feel good to chop the Russian territory in two, the only question is can I hold it through another winter?
