Part 69: Chapter 69

pun pundit posted:

Leave the bottle of water. Pirates only drink rum, dwarves only drink booze. It should be safe.

We can buy batteries with a coin and cart the pirate treasure to the surface, that should resolve the contradictory requests (though I'd suggest leaving the tasty food at "home" and going there first, so we have spare inventory space for batteries)

This sounds like a good plan to me.

Okay! So the plan is to drop the bottle, grab the treasure, go home, leave the chest and food, then go back to the other maze and buy batteries. Unless you mean doing the maze to leave the food outside, then coming back here for the treasures. Oh, well. I'll do it the first way and you can tell me if you're satisfied.

Time for the Speed of Mercury! SHAZAM!

In Debris Room
You are in a debris room filled with stuff washed in from the surface. A low wide passage with cobbles becomes plugged with mud and debris here, but an awkward canyon leads upward and west.

A note on the wall says, "Magic word XYZZY."

>turn off lamp
You switch the brass lantern off.

It is now pitch dark in here!

>xyzzy

Inside Building
You are inside a building, a well house for a large spring.

You can see some bars of silver and a set of keys here.

>i
You are carrying:
a treasure chest
many rare coins
a dwarvish axe
a black rod with a rusty star on the end
a wicker cage (which is closed)
a little bird
a brass lantern
some tasty food

>drop chest
Safely deposited.

>drop food
Dropped.

>plugh

Darkness
It is pitch dark, and you can't see a thing.

>turn on lamp
You switch the brass lantern on.

At "Y2"
You are in a large room, with a passage to the south, a passage to the west, and a wall of broken rock to the east. There is a large "Y2" on a rock in the room's center.

>s

Low N/S Passage
You are in a low N/S passage at a hole in the floor. The hole goes down to an E/W passage.

>s

Hall of the Mountain King
You are in the hall of the mountain king, with passages off in all directions.

>w

In West Side Chamber
You are in the west side chamber of the hall of the mountain king. A passage continues west and up here.

>w

N/S and E/W Crossover
You are at a crossover of a high N/S passage and a low E/W one.

>s

At West End of Long Hall
You are at the west end of a very long featureless hall. The hall joins up with a narrow north/south passage.

> POET, GO TO VENDING MACHINE
POET: All life's a stage, so just consider me a player. See you.

Dead End, near Vending Machine
You have reached a dead end. There is a massive vending machine here.

Hmmm... There is a message here scrawled in the dust in a flowery script.

>put coins in machine
Soon after you insert the coins in the coin slot, the vending machine makes a grinding sound, and a set of fresh batteries falls at your feet.

>get batteries
Taken.

>x batteries
They look like ordinary batteries. (A sepulchral voice says, "Still going!")

>

Batteries acquired, at the cost of every single one of our rare coins. What now, guys?
