“Sweet Christ!” Sergeant Rakoszky cursed, drawing an involuntary cringe from Agaki. Christianity was proscribed in the Draconis Combine, though the ISF hadn’t yet managed to strangle it completely in Rasalhague—and indeed, most of the Draconis Combine yet celebrated Christmas: albeit under the ludicrous name of ‘Coordinator’s Day.’ Such an utterance would’ve been a death sentence, if the 13th’s ISF liaison had survived the battle in the capital.

Under the circumstances, Agaki didn’t feel any particular need to report it. If anything, he understood how Rakoszky felt.

The Clan heavy ‘Mech which had, thus far, borne the brunt of his people’s firepower lunged from the protection of Stalice’s heavy equatorial forests and smashed into the unprepared Partisan. Incoming fire shook the Clan ‘Mech, but if the ‘Mech’s gyro skipped, the Clan pilot had compensated so smoothly that Agaki couldn’t spot it at this distance. The Partisan’s armor buckled under the impact, but the ancient tank weathered the punishment with surprising grace until the muddy bank supporting its left treads gave way. With a rather subdued splash, the eighty-ton tank vanished into the deep waters of the Lief river, clouding the crystal-clear waters with mud and shattered trees.

“Are there any survivors?” Chu-i Eriksson asked. His Marauder still glowed red-hot on Agaki’s thermals, and he’d been able to contribute only a token amount of firepower while his ‘Mech struggled to radiate the heat generated while his PPCs charged.

“The hatches were dogged,” Rakoszky growled, “per Draconis Combine regulations. They won’t get them open before the tank floods, water pressure alone would prevent it—and her rear hatch is so low—”

“Colonel Agaki,” Joshua crowed, “That was your last Partisan, quiaff?”

“They gave their lives for a Free Rasalhague,” Agaki growled.

“And so will your artillery crews, once our fighters finish hunting down the last of your airfields,” Joshua countered in a voice that sent a chill down Agaki’s spine. “Now, you have only a single Lyran Jagermech to protect them… or did we destroy that in our ambush at the capital, quineg? I can’t recall.”

“You will find no safety in the mountains, Colonel. If you truly value Rasalhague, you’ll surrender—further fighting will only bring hardship to your people.”

“Fuck you Clan bastards!” Agaki’s radio crackled, Satomi’s voice barely understandable over the twin ‘boom’ of the Luthien Maru’s heavy autocannons. One of the second group’s heavies staggered under a powerful hit. Barely visible beyond the treeline, the Clan ‘Mech tumbled even as he launched a devastating counterstrike. One of the Luthien Maru’s heavy autocannons shattered as a large laser struck the bore dead-center. If Satomi’s crew had fired an instant later, the shot would’ve struck live ammo—and the Luthien Maru would’ve been a memory; like an oil-slick washed quickly out to sea.

“You cannot hide up here, Freebirth,” a new voice spat as the Clan medium—Agaki recognized the design as one the Lyrans had tagged the Thunderchild—touched down perhaps a hundred meters away.

“I am Mechwarrior Capella,” the voice—clearly female, Agaki noted with mild disgust—announced, “of the Blood House Karrige. In my veins flows the blood of our Clan’s founder. I hope you are prepared for death in single combat, warrior of the Inner Sphere, for it has found you this day.”

“Ah, it is about time, quiaff?” Agaki’s face darkened at the smile Joshua’s voice implied. “Mechwarrior Capella is the best headhunter in Clan Widowmaker, Colonel. If she has found you, your end is assured. Are you certain you don’t wish to surrender, while your honor is still intact?”
