“I don’t like the look of that Urbanmech,” Joshua Davion grunted, slamming his feet down on the pedals and bringing his Gladiator up to a sprint. The old ‘Mech was designed by the Kuritas, who’d simply given them to the Free Worlds League when the design had ‘dishonored’ itself. Davion couldn’t see why, it was a fine machine, agile and powerful.

The irony of a Davion—even if he wasn’t actually a Davion—piloting a dishonored Kurita design wasn’t lost on him.

“It’s just a heavy autocannon. Don’t worry about it.” Valens replied, dismissing the enemy ‘Mech offhand. “We’re well out of range, we can pick it apart at leasure.”

“If we’re out of range, why would it expose itself?” Davion countered, his tones nervous.

“That’s not an Autocannon,” Masters reported quietly. “The profile’s a Gauss Rifle. ComStar distributed—”

“A Gauss Rifle?” Cage scoffed with an incredulous laugh. “R&D on Atreus tested those a few months back—same weight as a heavy autocannon, but almost a forth less punch. They tested them at heavy autocannon ranges, and aside from some improved accuracy, the weapon was all-around unimpressive. The ac wins every time.”

“Sweet Christ!” Davion spat suddenly as a silver streak flashed past his cockpit. His involuntary twitch send the Gladiator’s gyros tumbling and the sprinting Gladiator overbalanced and toppled off the edge of the docks. He couldn’t see what, if anything, the Urbanmech’s shot hit.

He twisted mid fall, taking the shock of impact on the arm—rather than to the back. The Kuritas had designed the Gladiator with almost all of its armor on the front, to keep their soldiers from running away from fights… but Joshua was sorely lucky the fall hadn’t penetrated his paper-thin rear armor and flooded his engine. That would’ve been a hard thing to explain to Captain Masters.

Paul Masters’ angry voice filled the comms, “… Rebecca, our R&D people on Atreus. Did they think to test the maximum range of those Gauss Rifles?”

Rebecca’s voice was hesitant. “I, er… the tech specs I got said the same range as a heavy autocannon.”

“… Our R&D people are imbeciles.”
