Matsukaze Ravenwater had a problem: he hated the direction his Clan had chosen to go. A staunch isolationist in a Clan where such sentiments were a surefire ticket to a solamha suicide-infantry regiment, he served the will of his Khans and the ilKhan, though he hated the necessity of it. A Clansman’s first duty was to follow orders, and he would obey no matter how foolish or shortsighted he believed this invasion to be.

He rounded a row of buildings, forcing his way past a row of hastily-abandoned cars and rustic-looking street vendors and into a tight alley that also seemed to serve duty as small open-air market. His target, a Panther bearing the colors of the Second Sword of Light, staggered as Star Captain Nasrullah disarmed and disemboweled it with his heavy autocannons.

He dropped his crosshairs over the staggering Panther, quietly impressed that the pilot had managed to keep his feet. Scowling at the necessity, he skewered the Kurita `Mech with his lasers and its armor ran in molten rivers like the blood of some ancient fire god. By rights, the honor of the kill should go to Nasrullah, but they had orders: no Clan `Mech with a shot on a target was to hold fire under any circumstances, the `Mechwarriors of the Inner Sphere were to be afforded less honor than most Clans showed tanks.

Perhaps prophetically, Matsukaze’s Streak SRMs refused to lock on, and the Panther, battered and near-broken as it was, gave his `Mech a vengeful kick. To Matsukaze, it almost seemed prophetic. He laughed at the bitter irony: a Clan `Mechwarrior who didn’t care to wage war. All that was left for him was death in honorable combat or, he amended, the most honorable combat he could find.
