The Calderas stood out in sharp relief on Lieutenant Chatzi’s secondary monitor. The rough and broken terrain: the sunken remains of a long-exploded super-volcano, was beautiful in its bleakness. Scrub grasses and bushes grew from soil tainted with sulfur and acid. The trees that grew here were gnarled, sickly, and simultaneously tough and immensely fragile, and no wind stirred through their leaves. Indeed, the air at ground level was nigh-toxic itself.

There was gold in the Calderas—a lot of it—but all mining attempts had proven futile; and the corroded remains of several excavators lay where they’d sunk half-buried into acidic sinkholes and quicksand pools full of sulfuric acid. The hills were alive on Chatzi’s magscan, echoes of his own `Mech and those of his lancemates flooding his sensors with false positives. Twice his computer tried to lock on to unidentified hostiles that simply didn’t exist. It was no surprise his company’s Sergeant considered this ambush country. He regretted not listening to the man’s advice hours before, but the fears had seemed unfounded and so he’d ordered his Company dispersed. After all, a Union-class DropShip could only hold a company of `Mechs at the most, and the chances of Pirates striking for such a remote area was slim to none.

With a flick of a switch, he opened a line to his subordinates, Lieutenants Asker and Chambers who commanded his second and third Lances. “Hold up, Asker,” he called. “We’re going to join up with you. Chambers, I want you to link up with Lieutenant Baker’s number three. Acknowledge.”

“I can barely hear you, sir,” Asker replied through a frequency so flooded with static and noise Chatzi almost felt himself wishing they’d had a tin can and a mile of string instead. From Chambers, there came no reply. He tried again, then a third before giving up. At least Asker’s voice grew clearer as she slowed her speedy scout lance to allow his team of heavier skirmishers to link up.

Worry gnawed at his guts like rats on a corpse.

“We’re reprioritizing,” he ordered over company comms, transmitting to every warrior under his command. “There’s some kind of heavy EM interference. The DropShip’s probably just blowing drive plasma to serve as a signal flare, but it’s whiting out our comms. Our first priority is to reestablish contact with Chambers’ lance, and we’ll continue our search in Company stre—”

“Contact,” Private First Class Flavian Gryphon called. “Unknown `Mechs on the ridgeline at—”

“It’s just a sensor echo, Gryph,” Asker cut in dismissively.

Private Gryphon barely let her finish. “Negative. I have visual contact with unknown BattleMechs. They are not FWLM! Repeat: they are not Free Worlds League Military!”
