“He can’t take us all,” Louw Bouman called over an open channel as his little bird-shaped Po lunged forward, missiles flying from his racks like enraged bees swarming from a struck nest. “I don’t care how good this guy is—”

The Annihilator twisted to meet him, arms spread to either side as if inviting the coming carnage. Its belly-mounted autocannons and lasers roared, ripping through the little Po’s center torso with terrifying accuracy. The little `Mech staggered as the electronics in the beating heart of its fusion engine burned to a crisp. It was almost mercy when one of the Annihilator’s pulse lasers sawed off the remains of its left leg.

Ho He frowned as she fired, her PPC catching the big `Mech in the left arm. The limb split from the torso amid a hail of laser fire even as it spat a shot at Sobczak’s wounded Flashman. The crippled heavy `Mech lurched and fell as spiking temperatures cooked off its meager ammunition. The big `Mech slumped to its knees like an exhausted man as fire roared in the ruins of its chest torso. With nothing to do save escape or burn to death in the inferno, Sobczak punched out.

Ho He’s world went white as a submunition burst against her Banshee’s cockpit and a freight train struck her `Mech in the left kidney. Her vision cleared as the boomerang-shaped barrel of her `Mech’s PPC sailed through the air; bent beyond recognition or recovery by one of the Bowman’s massive missiles. Behind her, Miranda howled in shock and pain as she clutched at her unprotected ears.

“To hell with this guy!” another voice called. Ho’s head swam as she struggled to identify it; but the matte-black body of Ethan Parkinson’s Po leapt from the pillar of stone the Annihilator was using to protect its vulnerable flank. With an impact too distant for her to feel, the huge Assault `Mech’s torso crumpled as the forty ton Po smashed into it from above and spun gracelessly to the ground below. With a dull thud, the Annihilator’s autocannon ammunition exploded; tearing its torso apart.

The big `Mech staggered, blackened and scorched, but did not fall.
