Cadet Guy Kazama of the Nagelring Military Academy hadn’t known what to expect when he’d volunteered to be an extra in a Thomas Hogarth film. No, he reminded himself, that wasn’t actually true. Extras in Thomas Hogarth films tended to fall over railings on high places, be caught in hilariously oversized explosions, or--less frequently--have a motorcycle driven through the still-exploding corpses of their battlemechs.

In theory, Guy’s role was simple: He just had to make the death of “Anthony Hawk” look good. It shouldn’t be hard, with the vast firepower of four assault `Mechs arrayed against him; but the training software they were using for the combat wasn’t especially sophisticated; and quite a few of the pre-planted pyrotechnics had already failed in the snow. His squad comms, the ones Hogarth hadn’t already co-opted, warbled with instructions periodically from the director’s command helicopter that hovered high overhead.

The Awesome, Zeus, and Banshee all leveled their guns at Guy and he knew his time was up before anyone said a thing. “You’re up, Guy,” the comms crackled a moment later. “Next salvo. There’re no operable sparklers in your area, so improvise. Try to bury yourself in the snow if you can.”

“Roger,” Guy replied automatically as he thumbed the fire interlock circuit for his SRM-4. Unlike Hogarth’s crew, who’d been encouraged to fire as much as possible to put on an impressive show of Lyran force, Guy’s instructions had been to keep things simple: Fire just enough to make himself look threatening. The harmless skyrockets mounted in his Panther’s launcher were a lot smaller and lighter than actual SRMs, so there was no real risk of running out of the harmless weapons. They had just enough black powder to make a loud bang and pop, though he supposed they may still have been deadly to infantry had any been foolish enough to brave the freezing temperatures outside.

He clasped the Panther’s hands together, raising them over his head and lunging forward as though he intended to charge into melee across the ninety meters or more that separated him from the stationary Awesome. He didn’t make it that far, of course. He barely made his first step before all three of the hilariously over-gunned `Mechs opened fire.

Guy staggered, as a beam caught his theoretically crippled Panther square in the chest. Against everything that’d been instilled in him over his years at the academy, he threw his `Mech backwards and let it topple. Thirty-five tons of armor and armament wasn’t a lot on the modern battlefield but for the small, soft human riding on top thirty-five tons was plenty. A bad fall could break a pilot’s spine, or scramble their brain. Sure, it may have been unlikely, but as Guy gritted his teeth and let himself tumble, that fear wasn’t far from his thoughts.
