“Two more gweilu approaching from the south.” the speaker paused for a moment. “New Syrtis troops.”

“I’m surprised any of them lived,” Anong Kamkong said, half to herself.

“Hrng,” Otaktay Red Cloud’s grunt was forceful enough to carry over the comms.

Anong wasn’t truly familiar with the taciturn Lakota, he kept largely to himself. He was expressive enough for a man who almost never spoke, she supposed. In the two days since the tragedy of the Yellow River’s crash landing he’d won a smile from her more than once with just a glance and impertinent posturing.

“You saw the clouds,” she said defensively.

“Yes, I did,” was his simple reply.

“Five to one odds, against us.”

“Then I pin my sash here. If we die, we make them pay for every step—”

Anong watched, perplexed, as Otaktay’s Huron Warrior brandished arms crossed in an ‘X’ pattern before it as though trying to ward off the enemy `Mechs with a gesture. His swift machine leapt forward, breaking their defensive cover as he sprinted up a distant ridge. Cursing, she jammed her feet down on the Wolverine’s floor pedals and grimaced as G-forces crushed her into the command couch. Otaktay opened fire at the closest enemy target, though she couldn’t tell if he hit. Her own crosshairs fell over the bulky form of an enemy Rifleman. It was a common enough machine even in the Capellan Confederation; but Anong had never seen one. She didn’t know the design’s strengths or weaknesses, and that was always worrying.

“—Besides,” Otaktay continued even as Anong’s pulse laser scored a solid hit on the Rifleman’s front armor. A distant enemy Enforcer opened fire with its autocannon not at the pair of them but at the Taurian host caught in between. “I think the odds are not quite so against us.”

Sgt. Troy Laguerre’s fingers flew over the Raven’s secondary keyboard as he directed its high-powered communications gear down into the well-shielded electronics at his feet. Although most of the surface-level electronics had been knocked out by the initial electromagnetic pulse, the systems were hardy. The bunker complex’s well-buried central computer had restarted the secondary systems without problem, leaving Troy with clear access.

“Main tunnels are flooded. The reactor’s completely sealed off and the central computer’s also fine,” he reported, “but that’s really not a good sign. Odds are at least one bunker’s cracked. Four was right under the blast site so that’s probably ground zero. Checking status now.”

“Hurry, Sergeant,” Dorian’s fine baritone voice was laced with static. “The Taurians are approaching fast.”

“Well, keep the bullshit off of me for as long as you can,” Laguerre replied. “These bunkers have their own computers; if I don’t give them the right handshake—fuck me, I was right! Bunker four’s completely collapsed!”
