Tyrone breathed a quiet sigh of relief as a flight of missiles passed less than a meter over the Vapor Eagle’s boomerang-shaped head. He twisted, ducking out of the way just in case—and cringed as another flight of missiles struck his machine from above.

“They are using guided mun—” he began, but was interrupted when a hard blow to the leg nearly knocked his machine sprawling. He spat a string of invectives as he fought the controls, but it didn’t take long for the nimble machine to regain its footing.

Stravag, where’d that—” his eyes widened as he checked the wireframe damage diagnostic. He slapped a secondary monitor, calling up one of his rear cameras in time to see the fading outline of the enemy Excalibur. “—it came from behind? I didn’t see it! Star Colonel, did you—?”

“Neg,” Star Colonel Kuro Maine was panting—not unusual. Tyrone saw he’d run his heat up again. It was typical of Clan combat doctrine to run up the heat and then cool off every few seconds. Routine cooling protected the body from rapid dehydration and there was less danger of passing out from exertion, but the rapid heating and cooling cycles took their toll in other ways.

The Star Colonel continued, “It was not there a moment ago. I had a clear view: it was completely invisible until it fired. This is troublesome.”

Tyrone nodded, his expression darkening. “—We must not permit them out of our sight again. Our computers can compensate if they try to hide while we are watching, but if we do not see them they will ambush us again. Star Colonel. What does this mean for our assault on the kingdom of the Usurper?”

“I doubt very much a freebirth will have to worry about the assault,” Kuro Maine’s sneer was almost audible, but his voice wavered with a hint of uncertainty as he finished. “By the time Gamma Galaxy lands, I am certain we will have crushed whatever paltry tricks House Amaris has in store.”
