“The Sentinel is unable to continue the battle.”

“Like hell I am!” Chase growled in an open broadcast. He was angry—understandably so, the damage probably wasn’t too egregious; but The Watcher had a direct line to the damage diagnostic computers their machines were all networked to. Likely, decisions on combat-readiness weren’t even being made by the pilot of the black-and-white striped Cicada. The Watcher was just a mouthpiece for whoever was calling those shots. Shoji had no doubt that if Chase persisted he’d just get his machine kill-switched.

“I’ve barely taken any internal damage! Sentinels run colder than your heart, Watcher. They’re designed to withstand engine hits!”

“Give it a rest, Chase,” Shoji said in a calm deadpan. “They’ll lock your legs if you don’t shut down voluntarily. I imagine the techs’ll be pretty upset if you’re not able to walk your machine back to the hangar at the end of this. Better to power down now than encourage them to flush all your coolant right before your next training exercise.”

Shoji dropped his crosshairs over the distant Kintaro. With the Crab so close it was like firing from sixty meters away, and his armor-piercing shell caught the crimson machine square in the chest. It staggered, and weathered a barrage of fire from the rest of the lance with surprising aplomb. Nothing seemed to penetrate the medium’s relatively heavy armor.

“Kintaro gyro damaged,” The Watcher announced again. “Kintaro is out of the battle.”

“Huh,” Shoji grunted. “So that’s what these useless armor-piercing rounds are for.”
