The sickening crunch of warping, shattering, and outright tearing steel-ceramic composites probably wasn’t really loud enough to deafen any unprotected and, fortunately, highly theoretical bystanders, but it was still a sound Caesar felt in his teeth. He’d heard BattleMechs make all kinds of noises over his brief military career, from the staccato booms of an autocannon hit to the deafening roar of a direct artillery strike, but never once had he heard a sound quite like this one. For a moment his Assault Mace stuck fast, and Caesar was worried he might need to let it go—it would’ve been a waste if it couldn’t withstand more than a single strike, but the enemy Marauder gave first and when his Mace came free Caesar practically eviscerated it. Coolant gushed like arterial spray as the mace’s blunted spikes burst coolant lines and tore through the enemy machine’s engine shielding. Bundles of myomer tumbled down the Marauder’s back like a loose cape as those same spikes pulled them from their mountings.

Caesar whistled, “Now this is a fine piece of engineering.”

“I find it odd, Caesar,” Dusk’s voice crackled over his cockpit speakers, “that the very first thing you do fighting alongside other Inner Sphere forces is strike an enemy in the back.”

“Dusk,” He sputtered, “It’s not like—”

“I have long since learned,” she began as her Timber Wolf lashed out, striking the Marauder just below the knee. Her machine wasn’t built for kicking, but it did the job well enough, its V-shaped toes catching the Marauder’s shin in a creditable trip. It topped, and the impact of the landing was enough to force its over-stressed engine into shutdown. “That you can take a Barbarian from the Inner Sphere but a Barbarian they will remain. I understand your nature, Caesar Steiner. Do not apologize for it.”
