Part 552: Auxilia - Turn 8

Auxilia: Tactical Update 8

A machine that looked like some mad repair crew had hastily slapped a Phoenix Hawk’s arm on a Blackjack touched down with a flourish. Its massive array of Jump Jets had propelled it along a low curving arc with frightening speed. With so much thrust a rookie pilot might’ve been tempted to take a huge parabolic arc that would leave them hanging in empty space for long enough for every `Mech on the battlefield to draw a bead. This pilot was no rookie, never letting his machine rise much higher than treetop height and carefully feathering his jets to bounce erratically in flight.

It paused only briefly when it landed, its left hand extended. An accusing finger pointing straight at Barna Roland’s Enfield. He swallowed, sweat trickling down the back of his neck. It wasn’t the same challenge one of the Draconis Combine’s samurai-wannabes might offer, but the meaning was the same. That pilot wasn’t going to rest until they saw him dead—or at least trashed his machine so badly he’d be stuck walking home. He did some quick mental math. The Clan machine had easily cleared 210 meters or more which, assuming Clan machines had the same limits he was familiar with, meant its top groundspeed was right around 120 kph, if not more. So it was more than twice as fast as his Enfield, with a better pilot.

He probably had the edge in armor, his machine was at least five tons heavier and the ENF-6J had been up-armored to boot. It was about as tough as one could realistically make a fifty-ton BattleMech, but who knew what sort of LosTech secrets the Clans crammed into their Blackjacks? He shivered, but not in fear. A grin split his face as he pointed back, then brought his autocannon across his `Mech’s chest before finally hooking his left arm and fist underneath in a gesture he felt was rather universal.

“Up yours, Clanner!” he growled to himself. “I don’t care how good a pilot you are. Bring it on!”

“Um,” the quiet ex-DCMS Mechwarrior Ronin broadcast a moment later. “That Revenant just sent me a text-only communication.”

“Broadcast it to the company,” Jason ordered. “It might be important.”

Barna’s secondary monitor flickered for a few moments.
