“Yeah, but, why the swamps? Haven’t we had enough moisture for a while?”

“Aw, what’s wrong Chancellor?” Robert Weisz drawled, “Just a little trip back down the Bye-you. I bet we could even get something resembling a gumbo down here.”

“You are not now,” his wife called him out, “nor have you ever been a ‘swamp gator,’ COOTS.”

“You’ve got me,” the speed-freak admitted, dropping his clumsy attempt at an ancient cliché. “I’m just sick of the whining: that’s my job! Here I am, stuck in this slow, fat pig of a `Mech—I need space to stretch my legs and move, all these windy little river nubs make that impossible.”

“Reign in the grousing, would you?” Duncan’s voice took control of the situation. His Atlas was moving better than Noretti had ever seen—Jason had called him ‘rusty,’ if he were approaching his true ability then his talents were being wasted for lack of practice. It was unClanlike, that a warrior would have so little pride, would let his ability slide so far. She wanted to yell, and scream, and rail against his profound laziness. She wanted to call the mercenary band out for their constant whining—all warriors complained, but they took it so far it was grating. But challenging one to a circle of equals would have been a joke, and not only because they were beneath her. They would not have understood, would have mocked her for the gesture or shut her away for her brazen defiance.

She turned the Phoenix Hawk’s head a few degrees to the side, pointing one of its directional communications lasers directly at the back of the captured Mad Dog. “How do you tolerate this?” she demanded bitterly, “I am nothing and I can barely stand this, but you are blooded and yet you aid and serve these mercenaries as if they were your Clan!”

“I have my duty,” the Mad Dog’s reply was not long in coming. “As do you. Have you never wondered at the true purpose of our invasion, Star Commander? To ‘punish the Inner Sphere’? Do not make me laugh. You served alongside Clan Sea Fox, surely some of their mercantile banter reached your ears? The Homeworlds are dying. Our resources are nearly exhausted—the worlds and space shrouded behind the Veil of the Protector have always been starved of elements heavier than Calcium. Even with the Clans’ aggressive recycling programs we have, at best, fifty years. We must return to the Inner Sphere, to worlds rich in heavy elements, and we must do so now.”

“And we shall,” Noretti replied, “and so we are! Such concerns are hardly fitting for warriors—”

“On the contrary,” Bethany Cochraine continued, “if the Clans succeed, we will not hold the worlds we take unless we understand the people we rule. Three hundred years in isolation, three hundred years of rationing and scrounging, three hundred years of ignoring everything that is not our immediate duty has left Clan society weak and rigid. Our leaders see that—they know it—which is why they have thrown us into the crucible that is the Inner Sphere so we might either be tempered into something usable or, if our society is beyond repair, destroyed utterly. And we, the bondsman taken by the Inner Sphere, are an ultimate test: to see if Clan society can adapt and grow or if we are doomed to shatter like flawed iron.”

“It is the Way of the Clans to adapt to hardships of all kinds,” Bethany finished, “to face challenge and adversity with pride. These mercenaries have more to offer than is apparent at a glance. So keep your eyes open, Star Commander, and learn. Or break and die. The choice is yours, in the end, and I can’t say I care which one you make.”
