In the holovids, Sam knew the Hero always got beaten at first; it made the come-from-behind victory all the sweeter. She also knew that, sometimes, the hero’s friends got kicked around—even killed—just to prove how bad the villains were.

Sam held no illusions of heroism. She hated those terrible FedSuns holovids where the good-guy always won. War was hell, and she was a professional soldier. She had her duty, and by Blake’s old robes she wasn’t about to fail that duty! Her resolve solidified as her head started to clear. With a smooth motion, her Zeus rose to its foot.

“Ah, good,” the Clanner taunted. “You have found your fighting spirit, quiaff?”

Sam ignored him and brought her Zeus up to speed. Without her left foot, it was a jarring ride that sent jolts of pain through her aching head; but she persisted; swinging her arms at the Clanner as she passed. Once again, the bastard ducked out of the way but she thought she scored a glancing hit.

Sam didn’t even see the kick as it caught her Zeus in the ankle mid-step. She stumbled, her vertigo or perhaps just a damaged neurohelmet cost the Zeus its balance. It tumbled again, right foot snapping off right where the Clan machine had delivered its last blow. She braced herself, clinging to her command couch in lieu of a restraining strap; and canting the Zeus’ torso at the last minute to cushion the impact.
