Part 704: Aeaea - Turn 5

Aeaea 5

“You fight with the ferocity of Clanners,” a deep, basso voice rolled through Varsha’s helmet speakers. She sneered as her target, a ‘Mech the Inner Sphere had dubbed the Anklebiter, took a fall. It was another inelegant Clan gunbox—a brick with a cockpit, arms, and legs that suggested the designers weren’t certain which role best suited it.

It had been configured as a sniper. It took guts to cram a Gauss Rifle into a ‘Mech that small, but the Clans had managed it. In the hands of a more savvy opponent, a ‘Mech like that could harass larger machines for days simply by malingering near the enemy lines and backing off whenever something advanced. She wouldn’t have minded piloting a ‘Mech like that herself—she just wouldn’t have been stupid enough to advance so boldly.

A hint of movement from the distant communications hub drew her attention. A fat slab of an Assault ‘Mech trundled its way up to a modest speed and ploughed clear through one of the camo-painted prefabricated metal huts around the base’s perimeter. Its sapphire blue body and gray-painted limbs marked it as another member of Beta galaxy. She shook her head as best she could in her power armor. A parade paintjob like that made a ‘Mech’s limbs easy targets. She’d enjoy shooting them off.

The assault was followed by another, then a pair of predatory-looking heavy ‘Mechs with sleek angles that spoke volumes. Most bird-legged designs had a tendency to bob and hop wildly with each step, but these moved with the otherworldly grace she’d come to expect from Clan machines. Their torsos barely seemed to move even as they broke into a run. They were killers for sure, and they practically blazed on the thermals, as if they were as heated and eager for combat as their pilots.

“I salute you, Rim Worlders,” the enemy Commander growled. “Now. Come forth and die.”
