Tigre’s battle armor cracked open like an eggshell. He didn’t even wait for the arm joints to lock before wrenching his long, tanned limbs from the confines of his battered elemental. A quick glance Jenik’s direction told him her armor would have to be cut off. It was blackened and seared and so full of holes and harjel that it was effectively useless, but it would keep her safe and alive long enough for the MedTechs to aid her. Technicians and laborers pressed their backs to the wall as he ran full tilt through the temporary command center’s hallways. It took less than six seconds to reach the communications center where, without so much as a word, Tigre simply shoved a CommTech out of their chair and settled in to tap into the planetary network.

“Messinia Base to all units,” the young warrior was pleased he’d managed to keep his voice calm. “Have just defeated enemy jamming, we are under attack by unknown—”

“Tell us something we do not already know, Messinia base,” a command frequency cut him off. The monitor identified the speaker as Star Captain Lucius, Galaxy Commander Juan Camejo’s aide. “The Galaxy Commander is dead and our own garrison cluster has turned against us. Freeborn commands all over Circe have turned traitor, we are in the midst of a full-blown rebellion!”

“The Nameless Clan has returned,” Tigre spat. “We have joined forces with them to battle foes claiming to be members of the scientist caste—”

“A trick, quiaff? The Nameless were exterminated long ago and scientists are incapable of fighting. They have neither the courage nor the temperament to do more than hide. We have not been able to get a message to allied forces off-world, the HPG network appears to be completely down. Defeat your opponents quickly and link up with the rest of your cluster. We could use Star Colonel Kyung-Ja to take overall command of—”

“The Star Colonel is dead. Star Commander Rozalija is ranking.”

Stravag incompetent!” The link disconnected without another word. Tigre slumped in his chair. Messenia Base had no freeborn warriors, the Clan could hardly trust lesser warriors with the next generation of BattleMechs, but the bulk of the Coyotes had joined Clan Wolf’s crusade.

Clan Wolf, another dead Clan arisen from the ashes of the past like a phoenix, in complete defiance of Nicholas Kerensky’s wishes. The dead should remain dead and buried, forgotten, supplanted by their betters. The Wolves had become the Widowmakers, the Mongooses had been devoured by the Burrocks, and the Wolverines had become ash. Then the Wolves had returned, and the Wolverines were now aiding Clan Coyote against their own rebellions scientists. And the highest ranking officer on Circe didn’t believe a word of it.

“Warrior, forgive the intrusion,” a man in a medtech’s robes bowed where he stood, just outside the communication center’s door. “Point Commander Rajab said I would find you here. We have been ordered to heal your wounds—”

“I am fine,” Tigre growled. He sat upright, turning his back on the technician. He was bleeding in places, he knew, but the Harjel would be sufficient until he had time to peel it off after the battle. He had to return to his armor and resume fighting. “Please reassure Point Commander Rajab that I will seek medical attention once the battle has ended.”

“Warriors,” the wizened old doctor bowed again. “Always so stubborn.”

Tigre felt the small hairs on the back of his neck rise as the doctor rose from his bow a second time. He turned swiftly, rising from his chair, he’d caught sight of the small, dark object held in the man’s left hand in his peripheral vision and acted without thinking.

Rather than shooting Tigre in the head as he’d been planning, the doctor’s merely punctured the young warrior’s right lung. A moment later the man’s neck snapped with a pop that was audible even over the meaty thwack of the hastily aimed right cross Tigre smashed into his jaw.
