Oh, wait, it’s so the Black Thorns can appear persecuted and/or show off how amazingly resourceful they all are. Rose then spends quite a while whining about how mercenary troopers were good at finding food and ammo but utter shit at doing anything else, and that they had to worry about maintenance on their `Mechs and security and training and, quote, a whole host of other things Rose always counted on Riannon to remind him about.

MAYBE IF YOU’D HIRE A TECHNICIAN OR TWO YOU’D HAVE AN EASIER TIME OF IT YOU MARY SUE ASSHOLE.Rose then says ‘fuck this noise’ to things like administration and responsibility and wanders off to finally supposedly report in to the command post; but really he’s taking his Warhawk out into the swamp to fuck up one of Esmeralda’s scheduled combat drills. After about half a page of simulated `Mech combat, the Black Thorns lose handily so he has Esmeralda stick with him and sends the others back to repeat the process over and over so they can learn to fight against him as a team goddamn it!
We’re then treated to dinner with Rose and McCloud and my eyes are glazing over already. I mean seriously, who gives a shit? We then find out that Captain McCloud, one of only two strong and capable woman in the book, who flew what amounts to a flying AC/20 into the back of the very Warhawk Jeremiah Rose is now riding in the last book, broke down in tears after shooing the DEST operatives from her bridge.
SHE BROKE DOWN IN GODDAMNED TEARS.

Jeremiah Rose is as perplexed as I am, and being a sociopath he doesn’t know how to do anything except get angry at her about it. I wish I was joking. WHAT A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP THEY HAVE. Seriously, you’ve gotta read this yourselves.

Rose was shocked. He stared at McCloud in disbelief. It wasn’t her reaction that took him aback. Hadn’t he been reduced to the same state after the destruction of his command on Tukayyid? What infuriated him was the fact that she hadn’t called on him to help her through it.
They then yell at each other for half a page and then they fuck.
