Acolyte Katou’s breathing was the loudest sound in his cockpit. The heavy thrum of the dropship’s engines transmitting up through his ‘Mech’s legs seemed distant, far removed. He took a deep breath of the heavy air, not wanting to tap into his space-designed cooling suit’s oxygen supply just yet. It was probably wishful thinking, but he had no intention of getting himself killed.

“Contacts,” the commander of one of the infantry platoons called. Kei had never met her, and didn’t know her name. “Adept Vandal was right, they’re dropping in out of the sun. Stand by for identification.”

He held his breath, waiting—silently praying that the rumors he heard about Clan super-‘Mechs were false; stories that ROM agents had made up to frighten the Great Houses into—what, he wasn’t sure. His radio crackled again, “Positive identification, one Guillotine; one—what the hell is—is that some kind of Phoenix Ha—shit! Shit! Hawk. Some kind of modified Phoenix Hawk, I think… and—”

The radio went dead with a sudden finality that suggested either a catastrophic malfunction, or something similar. Kei cringed inwardly, not envying the jump troopers—their spacesuits were well armored but would be no match for battlemech-scale weaponry.

Apparently, Adept Vandal had come to the same conclusion. “All troopers, return to the Blake’s Blessing and prepare to repel borders. You can’t do us any more good out here.”

“Peace of Blake go with you, Tyr,” Adept Johannsen replied, “and our hopes along with them. Fight well.”
