The concussive burst of an SRM was cut short by the outrush of air from his shattered cockpit canopy, forcing Kei Katou to hold his breath for the few seconds it took to seal his coolant suit and switch to bottled air. The cold vacuum of space was decidedly uncomfortable, and instinctively he cut the flow of coolant through his vest—no sense freezing to death when his ‘Mech’s ambient thermal radiation would still keep him alive. Probably.

There was no sound, save for his own breathing and the diminishing trickle of coolant. He toggled his targeting over to a secondary monitor; feeling quietly crippled by the screen’s small size. Rearing back, he gave his tiny assailants a wicked kick—and was satisfied to see one’s armor shatter. He stared in silence as the massive form inside tumbled away, and shuddered.

These were not men.
