Update 17: Proper Nouns


This music plays for the entire update.

So, last time we blitzed through all of East Sector. Or, most of East Sector.




One area that I skipped originally (because I wasn't sure there was anything of interest) was Protocol Forest.

New enemies, of course, fall under 'anything of interest'.


Kudos to using a Gargoyle as a base for the base.

Gargoylemon isn't too tough - a good fire or wind tech will put it down, since it's fairly squishy. Okuwamon isn't much better, though it can hit a little hard. They both have middling speed and defenses, so whatever works for taking them out.



Something I mentioned in the thread, but didn't mention in the last update, was that the game finally seems to have figured out how to subtly guide the player. The devs ramped up the difficulty as soon as we started going west (the wrong way), culminating in very difficult enemies that probably would have ended me had I not been grinding. At the very end, only after the player has ignored all other hints, does the game tell you 'you fucked up, go the other way'.

So points to it - that are immediately taken away by Knightmon

Yeah, I feel like Knightmon would have been okay if there was another super obvious hint before that. This way, if you continue onward, the fault lies with the player 100% instead of 75%.



Somehow, the red color makes it easier to navigate. Maybe the contrast between the red leaves and the purple ground is better? I don't know.



Moving right along, we've entered Protocol Ruins.



What a coincidence this update is going up on Halloween.

Second verse, same as the first. This guy's just a slightly less powerful Gargoylemon, so the same strategy works on Mummymon. Gargoylemon and Mummymon are the only enemies in the area, so it's actually a pretty good place to grind MetalGreymon.



Unfortunately, there's literally nothing different in this area. No chests, no unique area, nothing. I'm offended.

That being said, there is one Digimon of interest.

So, BK Whatevermon. Taking a look at his stats, use Magic over Physical attacks, but be careful - both of his attacks are physical based, so that 4 STR will be put to good use.



Regular attack is just a boring shockwave, something that I've seemed to notice happens more as the Digimon get bigger.

Probably because the development team was lazy/didn't know how to make interesting Giant Digimon attacks without causing issues.




Oh my god, the face on those shoulder pads and chest. WHO DOESN'T WANT THAT.



Giant Missile fires, uh, giant missiles. Shoulder pads are dangerous, y'know.

My strategy for dealing with him was fairly simple. Lead with WarGrowlmon and use the two party-wide buffs (+Def, +Str) and then wreck his shit. I was honestly hoping Monmon would Blast to Cannondramon, if only so I could use Cannondramon's Signature Tech on him; the Tech does extra damage to Machine Digimon, which BK MegaGargomon is. Alas, it was not to be.



...Yeah, don't fuck with Renamon anymore, she will wreck your shit with her Techs.



Kite: Of course! I've been battling everyone!
BK MegaGargomon: Wow, that's amazing! I'll give you this!
Kite: Yeah! I got the Wild Helmet!
BK MegaGargomon: Well, good luck. I'll be cheering for you!


And that's the extents of our adventures in Protocol Forest and Ruins! A pretty nice helmet for Kumamon, and a battle with a Digimon that doesn't know its name.

Back in Wind Prairie, this trooper is right in front of the exit to Kicking Forest.

GET AWAY FROM THE CAMERA. BAD BEAR BAD

Dolphmon got fried by one Electro Bolt, and Monzaemon wasn't much of a threat. Honestly, I miss that other guy. I had to actually try to beat him.




Also of note: Cardmon has leveled up. Tree's got three cards around it now, and Water's got two, and they hit pretty hard. Doable, but there are better options. Still, the card rewards are nice because I don't have to battle trainers to get them.

There's also plenty of Ebidramon to go around. Also of note: Cherrymon will only appear if you kick the trees. The drop is pretty useful - one free TP is one extra training session, so +8 in any given stat - but given that you'll also be fighting Cardmon, it's not very sustainable.



Before we keep heading through Kicking Forest, we'll be taking a swift detour.

At least this probably means more bosses. This game's bosses are quite alright.

These guys aren't really that tough, and we've dealt with Deltamon before. MetalTyrannomon is still easier, given the absurd weakness to WIS and Thunder. Again, Renamon can one-shot them with her Techs.



Nothing else new here, either, but let me just say that I like this palette swap more than I like the Asuka version.

I'm forced to concur with that opinion. Tyranno Valley is one of the few good spots in this game.

Hm. I could have sworn that conversation made sense when I was playing the game, but maybe that was just a fever dream.

The first sentence probably should have read "You gotta fight me OR go back."

Stats are a ballpark because the bestiary I use doesn't have BK Imperialdramon, for whatever reason. I'm guessing based on the raw numbers (which don't really tell you that much.) Anyway, that 5 WIS is his highest stat, so for once Renamon isn't that useful.



Regular attack - nothing special. Just a shockwave.




Mega Crusher is a little dangerous, so be careful. I'm not sure if it's got the Fire element, or if it's just an explosion.

It's ALWAYS nice to use the same move as the boss.

Well, that was fun. Back to the land of trees and bloodwater.

Why does everyone look so sad in this screenshot? Did a Digimon drown?



General rule of thumb, I think, is that anywhere an NPC used to be, or maybe a chest, will now hold a Trooper.

Now that everything is cleared out in East Sector - that Trooper was the last fight - we can head off to South Sector and start wrecking shit there.

We have other ways of getting to South Sector, though.



By the by, we have new enemies in the Seabed.

The Seabed we're going through right now is Seabed 11, but MarineDevimon replaced Dolphmon as the most common enemy we'll be fighting. This is because the most useful Seabeds are this one (Kicking Forest -> Bulk Bridge) and Seabed 14 (Shell Beach -> Phoenix Bay). Seabed 17, for what it's worth, is the Seabed between Suzaku and the UG Lake.



You can tell we're in Bulk Bridge because of the bridge, obviously.

New sector means new enemies!



Good to see Digimon ripped off Mega Evolutions as well.

The Bios Swamp is only notable in that apparently nobody bombed open the shrine. Either the A.o.A took over before that could happen, or there actually was a better way of getting the Digi-Egg of Reliability.



Jungle Grave in the light area has no new encounters, just more of the MegaSeadramon and white Seadramon.



The dark ground has a few new boys, though.

Kite: Phew, that was close... But now I can go into Zhu Que City.

Trooper: I'll continue scouting!

Dude, you're just staring at the sign. That's not scouting.



Not even Zhu Que City was spared the indignity of the A.o.A theme.



Trooper: Let's Digimon Battle to see who you are!

That's literally the- OK, at least this guy recognized us. So, what about the earlier A.o.A troops then?




What the fuck?

I laughed.



We're just gonna move on and pretend we didn't see that, mmkay?

RETARD. SOUND THE ALARM. You just identified a suspicious individual. WHAT ARE YOU DOING.



Trooper: You're that tamer! Prepare yourself!

FUCKING FINALLY. Someone recognized us.

Yeah, and it only took us getting inside instead of at the gate.





What killed the dinosaurs?

This.



I take the chance to upgrade everyone's equipment, since I have the money to burn. I know we just got another upgrade the last update, but we're moving fast - I'm at a comfortable level where I can handle the random trash mobs no sweat, but the Tamers might give me some trouble. Regardless of all that, Monmon gets a Psycho Blaster (just a +20 to power) and Veemon gets our first upgrade to the Zweihander, the Flamberge. It's another +60 power, because Veemon wasn't broken enough yet. I think he's actually broken 900 Power.



The pig behind us has nothing of interest, despite Monmon's insistence, so let's just chat with the Zhu Que Leader. Surely this will be resolved smoothly and without incident.



Zhu Que Chief: Only the members of the A.o.A can enter here!
Kite: Zhu Que Chief, where is the Digi-Egg of Knowledge?
Zhu Que Chief: Ha ha ha, so you're responsible for the Asuka Server! But no matter how hard you try, it's too late!
Kite: What? What do you mean by that!
Zhu Que Chief: Ha ha ha, I'll tell you! We succeeded in taking the undersea Base Magasta! And now we are launching the mobile fort Juggernaut!


I mean, they're capitalized, so probably they're important, but I have no idea why I should care.

Business as usual with this stupid-ass story. Throw shit at the audience and pretend like nothing needs to make sense.

Kite: Yeah, right! I'm not going to let you! I'll stop the launch of the Juggernaut!
Zhu Que Chief: Ha ha ha... Go ahead and try! That's if you can get by me first!




South Sector, round 2, fight!

Alright, first off we have Cherrymon vs. MetalGreymon. Fire is painful for the tree.



Next up is WarGrowlmon vs. Scorpiomon. Unfortunately, Scorpiomon is weak to Renamon's Techs but has a 4 in WIS, so it evens out. Still, I win in the end thanks to a full Blast Gauge to start with.



Finally, we have Snimon vs. MagnaAngemon; normally, this is where I'd go over the Signature Digimon, but we've already seen Snimon's bio.



Kite: Huh?! There's something on the ground again... Yeah! I got the Red ID Pass! ...But where is the Digi-Egg of Knowledge? I've got to find it fast to stop the Juggernaut!

Well, that was eventful.

Next time, we'll finish off South Sector and go West, young Digimon.
