Part 36: FOE in the Deep

Part 35: FOE in the Deep

Was that a new enemy?

Eh, probably, I'll write it down.

We're starting off with a bang. Or a whimper, since Bladers aren't a big deal. Usually by the time they buff themselves up, you should've killed them, cause they will really hurt otherwise. Their other skill was meant to boost their AGI by 200%, but instead of calling 0E3 Speeder, it calls 0F3 Speeder instead, which I don't believe is used otherwise, so hey, it could stack ATK buffs! That's the only interesting thing about it.

I hate these things in EOU. They're fast and can wipe out entire rows like it's nothing.

Even if their buffs worked properly, they're not really noteworthy. Aside from their high damage but, single target.

Anyway, who cares about all this shit, how about a Shellord fight? You better not get tired of them! While this one is avoidable, I would heavily advise killing it anyway.

My work here is done.

And just in time too!

When I pre-emptive these beasts, I lay down Defender so someone survives a hit while Gerson spams Antifire. Then when I bind its head, Gerson can F.Guard no problem and that's usually the end of it. So what happens when I don't get a pre-emptive, or I don't bind its head before Defender runs out? Haha, it would probably suck...

Too bad, you missed all my vital organs...

All of them?!~

With these Shellords on lockdown, does it make them any easier to take down?

It really doesn't.

Anyway, why have I marked these pits? Spoilers. You'll also notice we're on the other side of the floor. If you don't kill that Shellord, you have to walk behind it for TWENTY SEVEN tiles, or 54 steps cause they take their time. Now granted you can weave in front of it by going past the other pits I've marked, but if you don't reach that in time, or heavens above you encounter it coming the other way, you're in trouble. Just kill it.

This floor is all about long, drawn out suffering.

Alright, where to next? Keep in mind that a wrong step will send you down a floor and require you climbing back up and starting over.

Stay still, goddamn!

This place is really testing my patience.

Chasing Songbirds is easy enough, they go in a simple 6x6 circle, stopping at the corners to admire the view, or something.

Only one person is allowed to scream around here!

Aww, but I like doing that...

Always good to boost the 150% stat ups. You know, since you looked online for the numbers, since the game tells you shit!

Unless you were in the era of the early 3DS games, where such data mining didn't happen. Remember those times? If you don't, consider yourself fortunate.

Though since that circle can be basically avoided it's a moot point, but I'm trying to show something, shut up!

As much as you try, my heart will never know warmth.

Strange statement considering how furry your upbringing was~

Help, I'm fighting and I can't make it interesting.

LP another game.

stay the fuck out of my territory if you do.

Gonna wear down my rod at this rate...

...where the fuck are we?!

Let's see, comparing the compass to earlier, add in the steps, I'd say around... here. Thereabouts.

Factoring in intel reports, I'd put us more to the left. See, we know the pits are about this wide...

Take your time people, there's nothing much around.

I've just been following Gerson, I leave the map up to people who give a crap.

I have kept my eyes glued to an online map for this entire floor. It's so fucking disorienting and the fact I haven't made any mistakes is a miracle.

Craaaaaaaaaabs

Cool enemy.

Cool, some money. So worth it.

This isn't money, it's two items we'll never- oh. Yeah~

Well that was optional. Slowly but surely this floor is starting to take shape. But, uh, notice anything missing? So, despite walking around that square, there's no trace of the Songbird. Now, it could be in the other part I didn't walk on, but it didn't show up once. You know why? Cause YOU CAN'T SEE FOEs ON THIS MAP! Only when you're right next to them do they show up on your map, otherwise they're completely invisible. This is the only floor in the game that does this and it's just another thing added onto this floor to make it a nightmare for blind players. Even slow ass Shellords can sneak up on you. Also there's a pit behind us, since walking right up to the treasure is just too easy.

EOU at least justifies this with a really thick, foggy miasma.

It's amazing how this game screws with established mechanics only for this floor, as a pure fuck you.

So let's recap. In order to get through this floor, you have to somehow figure out that the FOEs don't step onto pits. Which the game gives absolutely no indication of, so you might think it's pure trial and error. But even if you do figure it out, the game fucks with you so you can't keep track of the FOEs. You could use the top screen, except the DS' shitty draw distance means you can only see 2 tiles ahead at most. So how are you supposed to get through this floor? By using the FOE field skills that you probably ignored completely before... except even they aren't great solutions to the problem either. The Survivalist's Owl-Eye skill will force the game to show you the FOEs, but it still has a limited range, and is barely higher than the DS' shitty draw distance. The Alchemist's Sight skill is global... but only works for one step. So uhhh, pick your poison. Not only that, even if you do know the solution, the FOE's movement patterns make it miserable to even navigate the floor, as Crosspeice told you earlier. So prepare for eternal hatred and suffering.

Oh, oh. But we're not done yet!. Ohhh no. There's one more thing that makes this an eternal nightmare. But you'll get to see for yourself later.

30 Yellow Ore is required for Topaz (Accessory, DEF+4, Volt Resist Up 30%), sells for 100,000en

Oh god I think I just threw up a little. If you're really so desperate for elemental defense, Tourmaline is only slightly more expensive, is much easier to grind for and protects against all 3 elements. But again, all completely moot since the Anti skills are so good and so important. The fact that this is the only real reward we get for beating postgame enemies is a real kick in the teeth, what a waste.

Everything about this makes me want to puke. Post-game accessory that sucks ass. Costs a ridiculous amount of money and needs a stupid amount of grinding to even unlock. Fuck this shit.

Alright, time to walk the entire length of the floor. Fun fun fun.

That's the way forward and already we see an impossible to avoid Shellord. Let's ignore this for now.

Alright, so long as we follow these guys we'll be good.

What's she looking at? I'm starting to think I need glasses...

Crabs. At least by mapping out where all the pits are, we see where all the paths are pretty quickly.

Does Karin always giggle so incessantly when we find something like this?

Since the very beginning~

Oh hey there was a Shellord in that loop. Well, if we wait long enough it'll head back there and we can slip past it.

This is still quicker. Somehow.

Ooh, yep, we needed that...

Everything finds my masters adorable. EVERYTHING!

Ehehehe, whacking is so much fun, I don't need to do anything else!

Nope! Nothing at all!

You'll burst a blood vessel there, Cheese~

A few deaths are a bit annoying, but it's only a couple turns.

We're nearly done with this floor! But before we finish this one up, there's one little thing we have to do...

Really, how are you supposed to know this was here?

By scouting the walls of a floor we haven't explored yet, duh.

Surprise, I haven't been completely honest of the shape of B28F, but this is the only indicator you should drop down from above into that room. Right, let's explore spike hell.

Man that was a shrill cry. Do you talk bird, Wagner?

I think it's saying "gna rek u n00bz lol" if I'm up to date with their slang.

What a beautiful language.

Sounded more like "ez mid" to me.

This floor actually isn't that bad, there's a clear path you can take that lets you visit all four corners of the floor without stepping on a single pain tile, though in a lot of cases it is just quicker to walk across them.

Ahh, it's the fast thing again!!!

It's not, gah, the same one. It's smaller and slower. And weaker, thank god.

I still prefer Maul, but this is another top tier name. Lucifirds seem pretty familiar, that's because they're basically a copy of Macabres! Even down to copying the same AI, so the first turn bug still applies, even if they don't automatically blindside you. Otherwise, it's a strong bird at a high level, so it'll definitely hurt, but, eh, it's whatever. If you can beat these, you can easily move onto Macabres, they're not that bad, really.

If you were expecting comparisons to EOU, well, uh... They don't exist in EOU. There.

Oh hey, an FOE-lite. We haven't seen one of those since Stratum 3! That's all I have to say.

It's nice to fight enemies with crippling physical weaknesses for a change...

This is really out of the way... if you're thinking the Armroot is in a weird place, well, you'd be right!

Heh, whatever.

You wouldn't be saying that if the other one attacked you~

Alright, now for the big one!

Ah finally, it's just been watching this fight with a weird look in its eye. But I say that about every monster in here.

A Sudden Gust of Wind Before Your Eyes

Ah, why me...

Sees you as the biggest threat, sis.

Well at least it's not my defensive members!

Still, at least Immunize is slow enough that Liana is revived in time for it.

I can't defend well when you're on so little life!

Whack whack whack. Wondering what he's shouting about?

Maybe I should lay off Caduceus sometimes. NAHHHHHHHH

Oh look, I saved the day again.

Wow, no wonder everyone uses a Hexer on their party!

Once you bind their arms at low health, there's nothing they can do. Easy victory, uh, kinda.

And now it's time to kill all the Macabres. Not because I have to, but because I need to unlock something that's bad and I'll never use. So, uh, yeah, because I have to.

Fuckin-

Interesting idea, but I think my staff being on fire is just distracting. Plus I can't whack as hard as I like.

Fair enough, just wanted to spread the love~

Oh hey, even after being in their line of sight, they still need a turn to start moving towards you, since it isn't aggroed towards us yet. Oh well, this works out better.

Right on cue.

If a Macabre enters a regular fight, then it doesn't blindside you and if it worked properly, you'd even miss out on Evil Cry. Handy! Just keep track which one it is.

You should've stayed in bed!

Well, I mean, its nest is right there...

Alright, uh, we've finished another Troubadour skill. I guess we'll do Ifrit next? Then finish up with stats? I don't fuckin know man. Anyway, level 10 reduces elemental damage by 35%, which is lower than Immunize! And reduces it by 10% while boosted. Oh, and makes the enemy 140% more vulnerable to the element, which can be helpful for some conditionals, but that reduction is the main reason to use these skills, since it gives your Protector time to breathe and not spam the Anti skills. But you'll use the Anti skills anyway, cause why not? These are only really useful for when you don't have a Protector for some strange reason.

Troubadours aren't really an SP hungry class, as you can tell. And yeah, who would even do the post-game without a Protector? Heh heh heh...

Woo, not me! ...Gerson?

So why did we do that again?~

For that sweet moolah!

270% power and a 50% base stun chance. This skill is only gonna keep getting better!

Caduceus is just. So satisfying.

Battle Medics just aren't the same in later games.

But yeah, I did all that because we need to unlock the stupid Zamiel Bow, but there's only 5 Macabres in the game! We'll come back for it later, we really don't want to rest up and have all those fucking Shellords come back.

Well this... wasn't worth it. Back to town.

Ahah, she said the thing!

Headroot. 10% chance. Sells for 2500en.
1 required for Hex Doll (Accessory, DEF+7, TP+50, must be restocked)

That's all there is to this large room. Not much, I know, but at least that's every gathering point in the game! Thank god, what a waste of time most of them are. You'd think that secret room is where you'd find the Armroot, but nope, this game just loves those curveballs!

Now this is something for me!

There no way to hold this shield in any way that doesn't result in spikes shredding your hands and torso.

I know, it's great!

5 100 Shells and 5 1000 Shells are required for Pain Aspis (Ultimate Shield, DEF+60, ALL Resist Down 100%, must be restocked), sells for 75,000en

Ah, something we've been building to for most of the game. The best shield, hands down, with a giant catch. When it says All Resist Down, it means ALL, you become twice as weak to all kinds of damage, ailments, binds, Instant Death, you name it. It makes Smite hit really damn hard, but that's the only real positive, with that resist down, we'll just say it gives +30 DEF, which is still pretty good for a shield, but is it worth being weak to everything else? No, not in the slightest. Despite all that, I'm gonna buy it, cause Gerson, and you guys, would never forgive me if I didn't! I'm saving for Lavin's axe atm, but this is next on the list!

This thing is garbage in EOU because Protectors can no longer justifying attacking, because their STR got heavily nerfed several games ago. It took until Nexus for the EO team to realize that maybe amplifying disable vulnerability on its own is already a heavy enough penalty for what's effectively a very strong weapon, and even then they toned down -100% to -50%.

This shield is fucking garbage in this game. How Smite works in this game is that the Shield's DEF is added onto the Protector's Weapon ATK. Except Protectors don't have a weapon mastery skill (and Shields has absolutely no effect on Smite's damage output at all), so it's just +60 ATK. When the Holy Aspis has 32 DEF, so you're only adding on 28 ATK when using the Pain Aspis at the cost of taking double damage from everything, being incredibly susceptible to lockdown, and losing out on the bind resistances the Holy Aspis gives you. Not worth it!

The Cavern of True Red

Now that's just gross.

Do those things even have mouths? Oh whatever.

Aww it couldn't heal its friend cause we KILLED IT! But yeah, you can see how quickly out of hand keeping Monocytes alive are.

Anyway, strap in folks, you thought it was incisive commentary, but it was FOE, turtles!

Maybe I should lay Sapping down... then start trying for head binds.

Everyone into defensive positions!

Hothothot! That was not the position I needed!

Alright fine, I'll stop whacking for five seconds. Bah.

Oh right, Liana didn't get the Defender buff. Sigh.

Just kill it already!

Sis... you're the best damage dealer we have.

Well that was a pain. Apollon fizzling out is real annoying sometimes.

Considering we have max level Aware: that's annoying.

How many is this now?~

Let's not find out, my whacking arm can only get so strong.

Same.

C'mon you big lug, I'd rather not die this time!

Love you too...

Eyyyy, I'm 'ealin 'ere!

How are these fights getting harder the more we do them?!

Fatigue, most likely. And this Stratum has plenty of that to give you.

See, twenty masters to a mouth, simple logic.

Oh hey, it can just reach over and chomp me. Good to know~

At least it's a nice close target!

Alright, if we see another one of these things, it'll be too soon, I'm getting heatstroke.

AlrighthereyougoguysgetmovingalreadyIcanseethewayoutnowIreallyneedsomewater.

I should find out how much sugar is in a Hamaoprime...

Ah, our THIRD unavoidable Shellord in a row. This wasn't listed on the online map, so it was quite the kick in the stomach. This has been the worst part of the postgame so far, since I'm not doing this blind, oh fuck no. And it's still downhill from here.

I'm right here you big palooka! Start ramming into me already!

I'm sure she appreciates the sentiment, but prefers the healing more~

I am making goddamn sure this is the last time I fight one of these fuckers.

That is, at least, the worst part of the floor done. We're not finished yet, but what's next is pretty damn tame. Probably because it's lulling you before it swirlies your dumb face.

AHHHHHHHH, kill it!

What a girly scream... where'd that Vox Stone go?!

Hazeflies are annoying, as you can tell from their Fear shenanigans, but they probably won't tag everyone, so it's an easy enough fix. No, their main issue is being mean to Dark Hunters, a lot of their ultimate armour is really annoying to get for some reason, though you can tell by the stats it's already shit. Regardless, at least it's not Hellfly's Curse.

What is it with this series and butterflies?

I don't really think we should-

Ooh, raspberry flavour!

So we have come this far and still we understand nothing...

Alright, that was quick!

Mhmhm, seems about right.

Amusing. You thought this would be over? Oh no, my friends. It never ends!

Alright, it's puzzle time. Uh, just let me draw it all in first...

Now, which one is the correct way forward?

It's actually not a big deal, by bouncing between staircases, you never run into an encounter, so you're free to check all of them no problem.

I don't need two of them... right?

It's not too long before you'll find the right one.

HYYYYAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!

Ah, it's so much fun awakening bloodlust~

Pretty easy to keep them refreshing their buff if you get rid of it. Cheese is great.

Ooh, axe boy is gonna be so excited come Festivus Festival.

Hey they don't call it that here, stop appropriating me!

Just take the hint already, game.

To illustrate just how much hell we went through, let's look at GameFAQs' map of the ordeal.

297 pitfalls, what the fuck!? Also, take a good look at the map! THERE ARE NO SHORTCUTS TO THE END OF THE FLOOR! You have to go through both the entirety of B26F and B27F just to get to B29F! The only shortcuts are the knowledge you've gained of the floor.

It's pretty staggering how much trial and error this floor entails and is also completely overkill for a mapping game. How the hell am I supposed to make this in any way make sense if I have an icon limit that is nearly FIVE TIMES less than what they're expecting of me. Just ridiculous. Still, that's at least two floors for the price of one, grandma, so we're moving onto the next one. Oh god.

No...

NO...

NOOOOOOO!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO~

*sigh* I never get a break around here. Alright, fly, my pretties, have fun and shit. God fucking dammit...

Welcome. To teleporter maze hell! AHAHAHAHAHAAA!

Bird-Shaped Vane on the Roof

Good to hear another section is over wi-

WAAAAAAAAARP ZOOOOOOOOONE!

Oh good, something to look forward to...

It's definitely time to start killing some dragons and shit.

Ooh, ooh, I'll tame them no problem. And if they step outta line I'll slice them up!

Riveting, so what's encroaching on my turf?

But who can enjoy a nice nature walk with a ferocious monster spoiling the mood? Get rid of that thing so our client can take his morning strolls again. Although the old man did say the monsters didn't attack him, and just left him alone... you don't suppose the monster isn't actually interested in people? That can't be... can it?

I haven't looked this quest up yet and I have no idea what I'm supposed to do, or where I'm supposed to go. I might have an idea, but whatever, let's go kill a harmless living creature so a shitty guy isn't disturbed during his walks through a dangerous monster infested labyrinth.

That guy has a pet?!

Yeah, he's got a little area out back in his garden. Have you... ever talked to the innkeeper?

This is a request from the the young man at the inn. It seems his pet mouse has escaped. Its name is Latche, and there's a ribbon tied to his tail. That's all I know about it. It escaped while he was taking it for a walk... Latche has a habit of running away. The little thing's somewhere in the depths of the forest. I've got its favorite cheese for you, so if you sense it nearby, sprinkle some around. It should come running once it smells the cheese. Let me know if you run out.

It's a shame he doesn't have anything to say, but we'll make use of this cheese. But no puns, despite how Gouda they might be.

...you can sell this? Well, okay, I only need 2 anyway.

Cool... at least I'm only a few days from retirement.

1 Headroot, 1 Armroot and 1 Legroot are required for Hex Doll (Accessory, DEF+7, TP+50), sells for 78,000en

We'll end with the last item we need from gathering. Its biggest draw is you can put it on anyone, so you can definitely replace a piece of equipment for a TP boost. I'll see who needs it the most, probably Liana.

It gives 100 HP and 100 TP in EOU. It's really good for Protectors and questionable on most anyone else.

...B29F is next. FUCK

Why are we still here? Just to suffer?
