Part Forty-Three: Rare Earth Crystals

Now that we've got all four of the elemental fangs, we're back on the Invincible and ready to head out to deal with the crystal.

Along the way, we can also see this scenic pond.

If you'll recall, the reason we needed to get the fangs was to get past these statues.

Instead of killing us, the statues disappear now.

You have to do this on foot for some reason.

Then fly past.

And hop these mountains.

Finally, we can see the fancy crystal tower surrounded by a giant maze covered in gold. This is pretty extravagant, but let's remember that the same people who built this also decided to make an entire continent float in the air.

This is the Ancients' Maze, one of the last dungeons of the game.

We're not going very far, though.

Because the Earth Crystal is right here! Handy!

I do like that they made all the crystals different, element-appropriate colours in this game.

Jesus Christ, I already covered that, kid.

By the way, there's also a boss, just in case you were worried that things were too simple.

Fuckin' lazy boss, though - it's just a recolour of the last boss. This guy is Titan.

Same as Hecatonchier, just with higher numbers - Titan has 29,000 HP.

Dude also hits a touch harder than the other guy.

So Protect would be helpful.

Too bad Sephy gets taken down before the spell goes off on him, so it defaults to Jecht and it's pretty wasted.

I don't know if I've covered this before, but Raise heals the same 10% as a Phoenix Down, which makes it a bit useless.

Titan's "special attack" is casting Quake, just like Hecatonchier's.

This one comes right down to the wire.

Not the closest battle I've ever seen.

The gil is decent.

Only half a party surviving also makes the EXP almost decent for a boss fight in an RPG.

The final crystal's saved! Now it's going to talk to us!

: Xande is using my power for his own evil purposes... He is trying to engulf this world in darkness yet again.

How's that "tell, don't show" thing workin' out, game?

: I will bless you with my power... Use it to banish the darkness that threatens this land!

We've actually already done this with the water crystal.

: The Syrcus Tower, known to you mortals as the "Crystal Tower," was created long ago out of solid light.

That's stupid.

I didn't transcribe this one, because I wanted y'all to look at it. I can't read this any way other than "Xande is using the light to flood the world with darkness", which is also stupid.

Yup, still our goal, still gotta do that.

As a parting gift, the crystal shimmers at us a bit.

And now we have a new set of jobs!

Including an upgrade for Jecht!
