Part 50: Part Fifty: Magic Alternate Cave Dimension

Part Fifty: Magic Alternate Cave Dimension

This little space between the Ancients' Maze and the Crystal Tower is the last outdoor area in the game, which means it also serves as the last save point in the game.

Also, for all the fuss Doga and Unei made about "Syrcus Tower", it's sure not called that by the game itself.

As far as music goes, this place does have its own theme, but I won't be linking it right yet. We're just passing through right now.

I kind of like the look of the Crystal Tower. It's certainly a departure from caves.

Right now, we're looking for this big door in a pool right in the middle of the ground floor. It's really not that hard to find.

Who put this here?

Examining that mirror makes Sephy pull a small sun out of his pocket.

A small magic sun.

What? The way inside what?

Do what?

Where are you going?

Oh, just The Forbidden Land, Eureka. Right, carry on, then.

Welcome, everyone, to The Forbidden Land, Eureka. It's a magic cave full of crystals. It may or may not be in an alternate dimension, I'm not really clear on that.

What I am clear on, though, is that it has its own music:

It also has random encounters!

Sleipnir, as you may or may not know, is the name of Odin's horse, and I was pretty sure it died with him, but there you go.

They're not very tough, and I blast through them no problem. The EXP in The Forbidden Land, Eureka is decent, but it's not really worth it to come all the way here to grind. Especially because the nearest inn is back on the other side of the Ancients' Maze.

The only characters I have right now that would be worth having throw this are Jecht, who has more important shit to do, and Golbez, who can outperform it with either Leviathan or Bahamut.

Fuma Garb is a nice find, though.

Fuma Garb is the best armour for Thieves and Ninjas. It's still very light, but it helps a bit.

Our next new enemy is Abaia.

It's a bit longer on HP than most other enemies, but it's not an actual hazard to the kids.

After the fight, I decided to check out Sephy's stats. With job level 88, he's pretty far along, but it probably would have been a good decision on my part to make everyone a Black Belt for a bit and grind up to level 50 or 55. The extra HP and higher stats would have been helpful.

If you decided to grind in The Forbidden Land, Eureka (or the Crystal Tower), Elixirs would be your only real healing. Duping items is handy for that, because you'll go through dozens really fast.

Soon I'll have actual Holy and these will be even less remarkable.

In case you were wondering, here's what happens when Zantetsuken actually hits an enemy. There's no fancy cut-in-half animation, they just die like they always do and it's boring.

Let's go deeper, shall we?

The Forbidden Land, Eureka is mostly made up of one main path with a few little offshoots that have treasures. They are not all this dull.

Over here, for example, are three items. That's three times as interesting. QED.

This little path is kind of hard to see, but it leads to something nice.

A Ribbon! I wonder what we have to fight to take it.

Jesus Christ...a Ninja...

The Ninja is really nothing special, it's just a slugfest.

Here, though, you can see why that extra HP I would have had at level 50 would have been cool.

A few extra points of Strength wouldn't have hurt, either. Really, I decided not to gain a bunch of levels before I did these last few areas so that I could still keep things a little interesting for y'all.

Like by having Sephy get killed because Jecht is slow as hell.

Man, fuck you, Jecht. You deserve to be poisoned by a ninja.

You do not deserve to gain a level. Jerk.

I didn't notice, and it doesn't really help anything to heal it, but Jecht was also blinded by a ninja.

So, the Ribbon. Besides being the best light headgear in the game, it protects whoever has it equipped from all status effects. They're handy, and you should have one on every kid by the end of the game.

Whee!

Since I can handle them with no problem, I decided to summon Chocobo on some unfortunate Sleipnir.

Chocobo Kick is, as is standard, a joke attack. According to the FAQ I reference for formulas and power levels, the damage it does is based on the difference between the Summoner's level and the enemy's. So I suppose I'd get more returns on it if I were at level 99, but on the other hand, no shit.

Whatever, I found a Suriken. Shurikens are an item that can only be thrown by a Ninja (with the Throw command), and honestly, they're the only things worth having a Ninja throw. They're very powerful, but they can't be duped, so you're not likely to be sitting on 99 at a time, making it more of a thing that only comes in really handy during boss fights.

You can also see in that shot that The Forbidden Land, Eureka is apparently floating in space.

A floating space cave. What the hell IS The Forbidden Land, Eureka, anyway?

Here's a better view of space.

Space Elixir. That's better than regular, because it's really cold and shit.

Space pathway.

Space critical.

Space Shuriken.

Space horses getting hit with a space summon.

Space Phoenix Down. It's all in bloody space.

Even these stairs and the next floor are in space! They're also where I'll be picking up next update! Ciao!
