The Devout is the upgrade of White Mage, with the main difference being that Devouts can use level 8 White Magic. They don't have quite as high Strength or Vitality as their predecessors (for some reason - this has been changed from the NES game, where Devouts were simply better than White Mages at everything), nor do they have as much MP for low-level magic, but those spells are pretty useless by the time you unlock the class and while lower HP gains are a slight problem (the Devout is pretty fragile), you can get by pretty well with that growth if you're not too reckless.

Being a plain "White Mage Plus One" class, the Devout obviously fills the exact same role as that one, which makes it a pretty good choice to have in your party in the later parts of the game, and while level 8 White Magic isn't really a huge difference in general usage (you'll never have the MP to make it a combat staple), it can be nice in a pinch. Upgrade your White Mage straight away, but don't expect any appreciable differences in play.
