The Magus is to the Black Mage what the Devout is to the White Mage, a straight upgrade. This basically means that it has the same weaknesses as the Black Mage (only being really great if its hitting a weakness, limited by MP pool) which are not at all counterbalanced by level 8 Black Magic (one absolute waste of space, one solid single-target spell, one multi-target letdown) while also getting to be in direct competition with the best spellcaster in the game. A Magus has more high-level MP than the Black Mage, certainly, and better Intellect, too - but even if you're using a Black Mage, this isn't the way to go; for straight offensive power, you want a Summoner, which comes with more powerful spells and a much larger MP pool, or a Sage, which can heal as well as attack.

Stat-wise, the Magus doesn't stand out. It's true that this job has direct-scaling Intellect, but that's not really that amazing or a standout quality, plus everything else is just so-so. Honestly, the Magus is unremarkable as hell, and it ends up losing the "good job in a party" competition to two jobs that come up at the same time. Like the Black Mage, these guys are best left at home.
