The Sage is a caster that can use all types of magic, but with a reduced MP pool and without quite matching the stat growth of a dedicated user, plus being saddled with the unreliable or weak summon effects the Evoker uses. Being able to cast from different schools does have one advantage, in that you can ignore less useful spells in a given level to make a better magic list, but that's a pretty small thing, and even worse when you consider that you're totally locked out of the most powerful attack spells in the game, and your Flare/Meteor level will be shared with Arise and limited to 4 maximum castings.

As far as stats go, the Sage looks fairly standard for a mage; low Strength, high Intellect and Mind, but for some reason they're slow as hell, having the lowest Agility in the game, which will probably mean that they go last every round. The Sage is really kind of bland; it would be best as a backup to a Devout, a failsafe in a tight spot, but then they're redundant as a healer for the most part and get stuck with worse attack magic than a Summoner and lower MP levels than either a Summoner or a Magus. Sages are certainly functional, and you can even use one as your main healer and magic attacker, but there are better options.
