Part 14: Chapter the Fourteenth

Chapter the Fourteenth, in which the Sho-Gun's father appears to be non-human and the roof of the palace is home to eldritch horrors.

Wow Fry, and you thought your dad was a dick.

Evidently he's feeling a bit cramped in here.

have some luck. .. You brought me the MAGI!!

Yep, complete douchebag.

Just as a note, if you talk to the dolphin statues on either side of Magnate you can fight this...horror. I mean, seriously, that's meant to be a DOLPHIN? It's hideous and yet...strangely cute in the face.

I'd advise against fighting it, by the way. It's got thousands of HP and can use a group attack that'll do upwards of 400 damage to everyone.

This is what we're dealing with for our characters coming into the fight. Fry's strength has started to reach some fairly impressive levels, and his agility isn't bad either. Armor's a bit lower than it could be, since we're keeping some of the strength increasing items. Lela's a bit worse off in almost all respects, and won't come into her own for a little bit yet. Zoid hasn't changed very much, but Bndr...well, he's got equal defense to Fry and his agility is amazing. He's got tons of HP and some serious hardware. In many ways he's the most useful party member we have right now.

For some reason Magnate doesn't count as human for the purpose of Muramas, bringing Taro down to the rest of the group for damage. Using his agility and a Catclaw Bndr can actually do some serious damage.

Magnate can do some fairly hideous damage, even with just a plain katana. That's hardly the worst of it.

The Dragon sword if Fry's best bet and doesn't reasonable damage. Interestingly enough, Magnate doesn't have the elemental resistances that have made so many of the other bosses huge pains in the ass. Unfortunately, Lela's doing pretty sad damage in this fight. At least she's consistent.

Bndr is pretty much consistently going first at this point, due to his agility. Taro's a close second.

Well...huh. We're kind of screwed at this point. Fry's taken more than 900 damage, Lela's down a third of her HP, Zoid is dead outright, Bndr lost two thirds of his HP, and Taro has about 100 left.

At least Bndr and Taro are still in commission. 700 damage per turn isn't anything to sneeze at.

Well, RIP Fry.

Okay, make that about 880 damage per round. Let's see who runs out of HP first.

Well... shit. That's not good. Down to Bndr and Lela.

And that's not saying much in Lela's case.

Luckily Magnate throws us a bone by using Thunder. The Dragon Armor proves its worth.

Bndr's still trucking, which says a lot for him. He's been worth every penny.

Somehow Lela survives for one more round...barely.

Although Magnate fixes that next time he gets a chance.

Through a weird trick of the RNG, Bndr actually gets to go twice in a row, going behind Magnate one round and ahead of him the next. He's got to be getting low on HP at this point...

Hey Fry. 'Sup?

Man, Magnate just kicked the shit out of us.

Shit, you ain't gonna go out like that are you?

Hell naw.

Things start out pretty much the same way, although a quick test shows that the Laser is not an improvement over the CatClaw.

Zoid comes within about 4 HP of dying from a single attack.

Oh, what the hell Fry?

Have I said how useful Bndr has been in this fight?

I count this as a wasted turn for Magnate since a single cure spell could fix it easily. Zoid has pretty much gone on cure duty for this fight. Fry actually is useful when he connects, but for some reason his accuracy isn't being as good as it might during this fight. Lela with less agility is hitting 100% of the time but doing less damage.

I think the total damage output in this fight is doing better with everybody more or less staying alive.

Wow, payback is a bitch. The worst problem with robots is that with the fact that they have no mana curing them is a pain in the ass. Healing from cure spells, as I've mentioned before, is calculated using the sum of the mana of the two people involved. Even a high powered cure spell isn't going to fix more than 200 HP for Bndr.

He is just not going down. Compared to Venus, Magnate is a huge jump up. He does a lot more damage and he's got about twice as much HP.

Seriously Fry, what the hell?

I've been very lucky that he's doing only single target attacks and spreading out the damage. Multiple hits on some of my weaker characters could bring them down pretty easily.

A pretty poor payback from Lela. You might wonder why Bndr's using the Tank even though the attack is weaker, but the simple reason is in the hopes that if Magnate attacks him again the Tank will block it.

I think it's a tough call between Bndr and Taro for MVP of the battle.

Naturally he does the opposite of what I was prepared for.

He's ungodly tough, and a real step up as far as bosses go. If you were annoyed at how the Sho-Gun went down, he's more than a makeup for it.

Looks like Taro achieved Hana's revenge. I love it when the game's narrative and the fights line up perfectly.

It's interesting that he has not one MAGI that would have theoretically been improving his attack, speed, defense, or magical attack. He was that tough on his own.

I love how Taro's just staring blankly and Fry seems to read something in it.

I'm embarrassed!

You two look great together!

Zoid, I think you've spent too long as a Fairy.

Well, this explains what Taro was up to here...

Good, good! Ho Ho Ho Ho!

Next time: A dungeon that certainly lives up its name.
