Fire Emblem: Awakening

Part 18: Emmeryn - Battle

Chapter 9 Battle

Gaius, Miriel, and Lon'qu will join in on the rescue mission. Miriel is especially helpful with her Wind magic and immunity to the desert.

Frederick gets all the D-rank Axe weapons available, while getting a Str/Spd/Def tonic for this mission.

Nowi gets a Def tonic and Donny gets a Str tonic.

Lissa gets the Glass Axe for emergency smashing and the Ladle because I don't have a Bronze Axe in tow.

Let's begin the operation.

Oh will you now? Bwa ha! We've been expecting you, Little Prince. Men: Kill him. Kill his sister. Kill his troops and his friends and anyone else you find! KILL THEM AAAAAAALL! (Gangrel and Aversa leaves)

Player Turn Music: Divine Decree

Player Battle Music: Divine Decree (Ablaze)

Nowi rides on Frederick's Wyvern and swoops down on a Javelin Soldier for a one-way duel.

The rest of the team pair-up so the more mobile characters are in front except Donny, who will take on the Wyvern on the right.

We have a similar race to Paralogue 2 to rescue Libra, though he can take care of himself for quite a few turns.

Pfft. What do I care of these Ylisseans? We're given no reasons to fight, only orders. What's the point?

Besides, I've always been quite good at choosing who to hate on my own...

Huh, that was weird.

Nowi makes the Soldier go boom on his counterattack and gets a free Javelin.

Also a new level.

Donny downs a Soldier with assistance from Sumia, which gains her enough EXP to level up.

Not if you're going to ignore gaining strength, young lady.

A Mage tries to blast Nowi out of the sky with an Elfire, but Frederick silences any further attempts on her life.

Libra's fine. The Dark Mage nearby literally does 0 damage thanks to his high Resistance.

Donny gets hit pretty hard, but his new, solid defenses prevailed for him.

Nowi survives the last immediate Wyvern Rider with little trouble.

Libra annoyingly takes out the Dark Mage first instead of the Archer he could just as easily kill.

Cordelia flies southward while Miriel clears out the Wyvern Rider.

That clears room for Lissa to heal and for Sumia to take out the Archer.

Frederick chips the Wyvern Rider to close out the turn.

Libra criticals the Soldier that attacked him.

Sumia gets chosen for the chipped Wyvern Rider's target, only to get himself killed for it.

VERY annoying. Libra could've just used the Concoction to heal himself, but instead steals a kill from Cordelia.

That means reinforcements are going to come from where we started.

While the rest of the characters continue south, Lissa Rescues Chrom to give him an extra boost in his mobility.

The Mage tries to hit Chrom but misses, and the Soldier just gets himself killed.

Gaius gets a level I guess. Libra walks over to Chrom to get himself recruited.

Good heavens! You're Prince Chrom, brother to Her Grace the Exalt!

You know me?

Know you? Of course, sire! All Ylissean clergy do.

I must thank the gods for uniting us! Oh, dearest and most heavenly fa-

With all respect, now is not the time for prayer-it's action that's called for.

Ah, too true! We hurried here to help as soon as word came of the execution.

We? Then there are more of you?

Alas, there were. I lost many brave comrades along the way. In truth, I was starting to doubt the purpose of my struggle...

But no longer! Pray, sire, let my axe serve you and your party!

Your love for my sister is clear. I would be honored to be joined by such a formidable woman of the cloth.

...Man, sire. Man of the cloth.

You're a...You're not a woman?

No, sire. Women are clerics. I am a priest. Well, technically a war monk, if you care to split hairs...

Oh. Yes, well, I'm...I didn't mean to imply...Well, this is rather awkward.

Oh, it's all right, sire. You realized your mistake quickly enough. It could have become much more awkward.

......MUCH more...

Right! Let's stop there.

Quick overview. Libra is basically a better Lissa, especially in the Magic department. Luckily for Lissa, she has much better reclass options to eventually outclass him but having two durable healers is never a bad thing.

Sumia transfers Donny to Fred to give him the needed speed to double the Mage.

Lissa heals Libra, who in turn heals Fred from the Mage fight.

Gregor camps on the fort and gets some WEXP for stepping on the Event Tile there.

The rest of the team chills.

Both an Archer and Wyvern Rider attacks Gregor, both didn't hit him.

Fred finishes off the Wyvern Rider, while Miriel snipes the Soldier on the bottom.

Lon'qu tests out his shiny new Killing Edge with a 1st attack crit. The rest of the turn is clumping together and healing.

Not only are there Wyvern reinforcements, but two more units pop out from the forts up ahead.

Both sides start to pincer in on the Shepherds. Libra starts off the new turn by healing Nowi.

Let's recruit this Tharja.

Death comes for all of us eventually. Why invite it early, fighting for a cause I don't believe in?

So...I should take that as a no, or...

Let's just say I'm keeping my options open. I mean, long live the king and all, but I'd like to keep living as well. And I have a bit of a rebellious streak I'm afraid. A...dark side.

Then perhaps you would rebel now and fight for our cause?

...You would trust me? What if this is all just a ploy to plunge a dagger in your back?

My sister, the exalt-I think she would trust you. And I'm trying to learn from her. Besides, I already need to watch my back, whether you're with us or not.

Well, that's odd...Usually when I bring up the backstabbing bit the discussion is over.

All right, then-consider me your new ally. ...For now.

Tharja's our first Dark Mage, which are basically more tankish Mages with really low Skill. This is taken further when you consider Dark Magic to be the most inaccurate type of Tomes in the game. Her two skills, Hex (Avoid -15 to adjacent enemies) and Anathema helps lessen that problem by basically reducing any unit's Avoid by basically 25%.

Elthunder is a 6 Mt D-rank Tome. We've already seen Nosferatu, and in the hands of Tharja she can tank just as well as Nowi if she's paired with a defensive unit like Kellam.

What a cupcake!

Anyways, Gaius crits the Archer nearby and gets a Killer Bow for his troubles.

Miriel takes out the upper Wyvern Rider and gains an excellent level in the process.

Lon'qu finishes off the Mage with a frustrating critical in the 2nd attack.

Tharja borrows Lissa a bit to deal extra damage on the Soldier. Nowi blasts him to oblivion.

Only really care about Def there. The double HP is a nice bonus.

Gregor and Fred tag-team to take out the bottom Rider.

Excellent. All the essentials he needs. Fred is already on par with some of our better fighters.

Donny gives Fred back to Nowi as she blasts a Rider for no damage back.

Cordelia finishes off Nowi's playmate with a critical and a great level. She also learns Relief (Heals 20% of health if no other ally is within a 3-space radius).

Like candy from a babe!

Gaius puts those two last uses of the Killing Edge to work.

Nowi chips a Rider, then Miriel finishes off the other enemy unit.

Suia gets a new support buddy in Libra to get the needed strength to kill the last Wyvern Rider. She gets a terrible level for her efforts. Free Hand Axe, though.

Next few turns involved healing and Lon'Qu stepping on an Event Tile to gain WEXP.

Lissa gained...well, a level. She picked a GREAT time to stop gaining strength...

Frederick gets attacked by Campari and gets a nasty blow from his Short Spear.

Of course, that was actually a ruse so Fred can gain that extra EXP needed to level up.

Impressive. Fred won a Dracoshield, which permanently boosts defense by 2.

For once I agree. Now, where's Emm?

I'm giving the signal!

*Phila's squad arrives*

Phila! I'm so glad to see you're safe! But how-

Khan Basilio's men freed me. Come, we must hurry!

What? Pegasus knights? How did they...

That damned Ylissean tactician does NOT play fair!

Heh heh heh...Yes, well. Neither do I.

*units teleport in*

Chrom! There are Risen everywhere!

Damn! Not now!

Bwa ha ha! Oh, did an army of living corpses just APPEAR out of the blue?! Truly, the heavens smile upon mighty King Gangrel this day! Bwa ha ha ha!

Y-Your grace, I....Forgive me...Uhh...

Exeunt one pegasus knight! Bwa ha ha! Watch how they fall, one by one!

We've lost...

I believe this is what they call a reversal of of fortunes. Now...grovel before me. Plead! Beg for your worthless lives!

I'd give up my life before I'd beg for it from you.

Oh, now THAT is a good line. A fitting epitaph for your tombstone, perhaps?

But it's not just your life in the balance. The exalt still sands upon the block. And I have a dozen bows trained on her. All it would take is one word from me...

Emm! Hold on, I'm-

ARCHERS! If this Ylissean pup so much as twitches, let fly your arrows!

I...I'll kill you!

Go ahead! I welcome it. Just know you were responsible for Big Sister's bloody demise! ...And what of the rest of you? Eh? Who wants the honor of killing the exalt? ...No one? Bah! Your merry band isn't quite so headstrong anymore, is it? Pathetic!

Damn you!

Now, now, my boy-no one needs die today. Not you. Not the exalt. Not your friends. Just lay down your sword, and give me the Fire Emblem.

...I...

Of COURSE I can't trust him! I'm not an idiot! But if I just say no, he'll kill her! The gods are cruel, damn them! My sister or my duty...A problem with no right answer, yet I must choose!

I know it's hard to admit, Chrom, but it's the only choice. Compared to the lives of thousands, one person, any one person, is—

DON'T! Just...don't say it.

What's this? You'll let your sister and ruler die, all to save some old family trinket? Oh, so delicious! I can't WAIT to hear what your people have to say about it. "THE EXALT IS DEAD! LONG LIVE HER MURDERER!" Your halidom will collapse before you could even begin your rule...

We'll see, when the time comes. But first, I'll see you dead.

That's right. Don't give up! There has to be a way...

If there is, I can't see it...Ah, gods!

I will count to three! Throw down your weapons, or our exalt becomes the world's largest quiver. One! Two! Thr-

Gangrel, hold! ...You win. Everyone, lay down yo-

(result after choice regardless)

SILENCE!

Emm...

Music: Dry your tears, love. This is not good-bye

King Gangrel, is there no hope you will listen to reason?

You mean listen to more of your sanctimonious babble?! I think not. No, all I want to hear now is the THUNK of arrows, and a SPLAT as you hit the ground. Take one, long, last look from your perch. You do so enjoy looking down on people...Then prepare to meet the ground, and your maker! That is, unless someone were to give me the Emblem...NOW!

......

All right...Emm, I know you won't approve, but this is my final decision. MAYBE someday we'll face a crisis where MAYBE the Emblem would've helped...But I know for a fact that Ylisse needs you, today! The people need their exalt...And we need our sister. If those dark days should come, we'll face them together.

Chrom...

Th-thank you. I know now what I must do...

Emm, what are you-

Plegians! I ask that you hear the truth of my words! War will win you nothing but sadness and pain, both inside your borders and out. Free yourselves from this hatred! From this cycle of pain and vengeance. Do what you must...As I will do.

See now that one selfless act has the power to change the world!

Emm, no! No!

Was I wrong, then?

This is some torch I'm passing you...

So be it.

Music: I've never seen one fall so gracefully

DAMN YOU, GANGREL!

Bwa ha ha haa! Well now! ...How disgustingly noble. And so lovely a fall! Here I thought death to be an ugly thing. I've never seen one fall so gracefully, in fact. ...And I've seen many fall.

Ah...So ends Emmeryn, Ylisse's most exalted! But how can we ensure everyone remembers this beautiful moment of her sacrifice?

Perhaps we should gather up her body and put it on display! Bwa ha ha...

Gangrel! You die today!

*Khans arrive*

B-but...her body...I have to...

No! No...I'm too late...Our bleak future is written once more...and darkness awaits us all.

Next time: Renewal

extras

Libra
Starting Class: War Monk
Weapon rank: Axes (C), Staves (C)
Abilities:
-Healtouch (Increase healing by 5)
-Miracle (Survive fatal blow by Lck%, must have more than 1 HP)

War Monk Support Bonus: +2 Str/Mag/Def/Res

Reclass Options: Priest, Mage, Dark Mage

Base Stats-Hard Mode (Growth Rates)

HP-39 (90%) Spd-14 (50%)
Str-14 (40%) Lck-10 (45%)
Mag-16 (50%) Def-11 (35%)
Skill-13 (55%) Res-16 (40%)

Libra exists as a subtle jab towards players that have a hard time keeping healers alive up til this point. He is durable, can hit back hard with a good Axe rank, and have enough speed to even double some enemies.

He comes with a Ward Staff, which boosts an ally's Res by 5 and it goes down each turn.

Official Bio: An Ylissean priest with a calming mien. So lovely are his features that strangers often mistake him for a woman. His one flaw is a tendency to get caught up in details. The one with the scabbiest knees.

Tharja
Starting Class: Dark Mage
Weapon rank: Tomes (D)
Abilities:
-Hex (Avoid -15 to all adjacent enemies)
-Anathema (Avoid/Crit Dodge -10 to all enemies within a 3 tile radius)

Dark Mage Support Bonus: +3 Mag/+3 Def

Reclass Options: Dark Mage, Knight, Archer

Base Stats (Growth Rates)

HP-25 (90%) Spd-12 (60%)
Str-4 (30%) Lck-3 (40%)
Mag-11 (60%) Def-10 (45%)
Skill-5 (40%) Res-7 (30%)

As the first user of Dark Magic, you'll learn that the dark Tomes are in a class of themselves when it comes to power. Ranging from long-range magic to healing like Nosferatu, Dark Mages are one of the best spellcasters in the game.

Tharja's horrendous Skill really needs a Skill Book, but don't try to use a Second Seal to switch to Archer to fix it. Just pair her with a class that gives Skill like Virion or Gaius.

Official Bio: A mopey Plegian dark mage with a jealous streak. She usually keeps to herself and chants disturbing hexes, but openly stalks You, the player's character, in who she has an unhealthy interest. The one with the darkest thoughts.
