Part 35: Smoldering Resistance: - Battle

Chapter 15 Battle

Promotion Time

Owain gets promoted to Swordmaster, gaining a lot of strength and even more overkill speed and skill.

And yes, Swordmasters carry two sheathes along their regular sword. And never use them ever.

The selected team coming along, with Gaius as the last member after a long hiatus. Let the invasion commence.

Who is that? ...The Ylissean League! So they have finally landed!

Over 'ere! We have 'er cornered!

Confound these wretched imperials! (Flees)

Don't let 'er get away!

If possible, we should also visit the homes here to see how the people fare.

So, two things here to start off. As I mentioned before, the bottom half is basically a desert so the bottom forces won't be a problem for quite a few turns.

The second thing is that if we want Say'ri as a party member, she has to be saved from the Valmese and Chrom has to talk to her. If she dies in battle (she currently has nothing except a Concoction), she'll still join for story purposes but can't be used as a fighting unit. This is basically the same rule as Lissa/Sumia/Frederick when they fall in combat.

Robin joins with her daughter, then steps up north to chip the beefy General to 10 HP.

Gaius rides with Cherche, while Cordelia pairs up with Henry.

Gregor teaches the wonders of overkill strength to Owain as he takes out a Cavalier.

Cordelia trades her Armorslayer to Gaius so he can actually dent and kill the General.

Gaius starts off strong with a great level, hoping to stay on the team.

Lissa supports Maribelle to give her enough magic juice to Rescue Say'ri from the enemy forces.

Morgan tags along with Donny as he equips a Bronze Axe to build weapon rank and help block off the gap.

Owain takes out one Cavalier on the enemy turn before the rest got in safe attacks and crowd the blockade.

Owain clears out an enemy, then Gaius took out a Mage in its place for a hit-and-run.

Maribelle then Rescues Gaius being attacked a million times. Some formation changes include Lucina taking wall duties with a Bronze Lance in hand.

Chrom recruits Say'ri.

The what now?

You know of our cause?

Of course! I would speak with you more—but first, perhaps...

...Ah, yes. Time enough for that once the fighting is finished.

Say'ri is a stronger Owain, along with the same insane speed and skill. The one major flaw is that while she has great stats, her Support list is extremely limited to Robin and a character we don't have for quite a while.

She'll borrow a Silver Sword from the convoy to end the turn.

Lucina holds her own against a Knight, while Owain chips a General for a good level.

The Ylissean siblings continue to cover the gap with Lucina healing herself via Falchion and Owain with his Renewal.

Gaius takes down another General for more strength.

More hit and run. Maribelle gains every stat except HP and speed from all that Rescuing.

Morgan with Donny supporting ends the turn to bait out a Cav.

Lucina takes out the Knight from last turn, while Morgan's plan goes perfect.

Lucy starts murdering the attackers one by one, gaining a level with every stat except magic and defense.

Robin joins in on the fun for a...well, it's magic at least.

Things are starting to clear up after Lucy kills like 5 enemies. She moves ahead to block the lower gap and heals again.

Gaius and Gregor (Okay, more like Gaius being bailed out by Gregor) takes out the Cavalier on the upper right gap.

Morgan takes out another Cavalier and gains B rank Tomes.

Gaius heavily chips an attacking Knight for his next EXP meal.

Lucina's lance motions combined with her sword-stab style suggests she trained with them when she was young before acquiring Falchion. She certainly seems more natural-looking with it.

Some people just have a death wish. His was crispy.

Lucy gains another excellent level off that kill, getting everything but magic and resistance.

Another Cavalier dies before the remaining enemies moved in to end their phase.

Team Plucky Youngsters takes out the last remaining beach Mage for a double level-up.

Morgan gains everything but magic, defense, and resistance. Donny doesn't get skill, magic, or resistance.

Gaius finishes off his prey for a decent level. The strength train had to end sometime, I guess.

Gregor takes out a Knight from long range with a critical from Owain.

Say'ri transfers Cherche to her spot, then switches the lead back to Cherche. Chrom blocks the upper-left gap with a Bronze Lance in hand.

Lucy and Lissa each take out more Valmese.

It's amazing Lissa can get a spell off, let alone hit twice with that much vertical shift.

Cordelia barely scratched the paint on an attacking General with her Bronze Axe. Henry didn't even do that much on a Dual Attack.

Lucy defeats another Cavalier and gets a free Steel Sword. Chrom gets attacked by a Cavalier and Dark Knight.

That is one evil-looking class.

Gaius joins with Blue and takes out the weakened Cav soldier.

Cherche takes on the Dark Knight, emerging victorious with Say'ri's help.

Gregor takes out the Mage, then Maribelle rescues Cherche from the eyes of the General.

Morgan takes out a General easily, then Henry waits in a sweet spot where only one enemy can hit him.

The Bronze Ax duo did decent damage on the Knight, but more importantly, Henry hits D rank axes.

D rank means HAMMER TIME

Oh come on, what is that. At least he got a Steel Lance out of that battle...

A 360 spinning slash puts the last Dark Knight out of commission. Donny gets an Arc Thunder as a prize (10 Mt, C rank Tome, 10 crit, 30 uses).

Maribelle gains another level from healing. Resistance isn't that great, though. She's turning out decently, though really her stats could be 0's except for magic for her purpose.

Gregor chips the General for a pretty good level, gaining everything but magical stuff and speed.

Well of course Lucy activates Ignis+critical when I de-equip Robin for chipping purposes.

Gaius gains EXP from an Event Tile, while Cherche flies to the third house from the left.

There's no standing against the emperor! All who question him are slain on the spot. I am a refugee here... The dastard razed my entire village just for sport! If you truly mean to fight him, I'd have you take this. You can use it to heal the wounds of comrades from afar.

Cherche receives a Physic staff.

Next turn, Cherche visits the far right house.

: Yes? Helping Say'ri, are you? Good, good! We need such bravery in these times. Here now, sell this at market and use the funds to arm your forces. I'd rather see you put it to use than have that tyrant steal it.

He gives out a Large Bullion, which is good because I'm starting to run low on funds after buying Rescue Staves and Second Seals from Anna.

Gregor visits the 2nd house from the left.

Oh, well, you don't look imperial, do ya! Care for a wee bit o' gossip? I hear tell of resistance movements all across the continent. Each one strivin' to end Walhart's cruel tyranny...but they're divided. Scattered. They say a beautiful swordmistress is tryin' to unite 'em! Cor blimey!

Now, I've never even seen me this lady, but I wish to help her all the same. Should you find her, ask that she read this. It'll make her even keener with a blade!

Gregor gets an Arm Scroll. Useful to get someone out of E rank hell for the future.

Henry slightly overkills on the final mook of the map.

What is wrong with his eyes? Is he...napping? Just look at that expression. I think he was just chilling before we interrupted nap time. That's why he didn't move at all!

Gregor visits the last house, on the far left.

: (Psst! Talk quietly now! The Conqueror has ears everywhere... Between us...I support the Resistance and all, but I'm not about to stand against him. If his men even knew I talked to you, they'd slice me open and wear me like a jacket! ...Er, but good luck to you, though!)

: ......

: (...Oh, fine. Here. Take this. Just don't tell anyone I helped you!)

And this one gives out a Second Seal.

Where did you learn that?

Uh, anyways, Gaius chips the boss for a level before Lucy ends it.

Jerk.

Strength is some sort of curse word, I swear...

And a free Master Seal to boot.

I am called Say'ri, and I fight with the Resistance.

So there is an organized resistance?

Aye, of sorts. Several groups formed to seek liberty for the states of Valm.

I thought the emperor had stamped out all dissenters...

He tries, but we Resistance are a slippery lot. We strike hard and then vanish again into the dark of night. Even now rebels ride to the banner of dynasts across the continent. United, we could pose a veritable threat to Walhart. And so, for some time I have struggled to bring us together.

What's stopping you?

Greed. Jealousy. Sloth. All the old weaknesses of man. The dynasts all would have freedom, but on their own terms. Some refuse to take up arms unless their territory is threatened. Others thrive under the Conqueror's heel and will not join unless there is profit in it. Liberty is a fine word, aye, but not always enough to rouse men from foolishness.

I take it you're looking for a more convincing argument, then?

Just so, although my efforts thus far have met with meager success. I fear many distrust me because my brother fights for Walhart.

Why does he support the empire?

Would that I knew, good sir. Yen'fay was a good man once, but he is my brother no more! If we meet on the battlefield, I would cut him down, same as any other imperial. Walhart is said to command a million men now. Perhaps more. Sooner or later he will stamp out the Resistance entirely, if we do not unite.

Ha! And what are one million men against the Ylissean dogs of war?! You stopped a thousand of their ships, did you not? Your daring strategy has awoken and inspired people across all of Valm. Together I know we can yet unite the Resistance and break Walhart's grip!

Help me, Prince Chrom! I beg of you!

Milord?

This is no easy thing you ask of me. I have my own causes: a halidom to save and a future to win.

......

I know a great battle has been foretold, but is this it? How to know?

Still, I admire your courage... Perhaps your mission is the best way to achieve mine.

So yes, Say'ri. I will join your cause with my own. And if I'm wrong, it's my life on the line....As it should be. Now. What will it take to unite your people?

More precisely, we worship the divine dragon's oracle, Lady Tiki. Though most know her only as the Voice. The Voice is trapped in her temple as Walhart's prisoner. But if she were freed...

The Resistance could unite around her. Where is the Voice being held?

There is a shrine built in the branches of the divine Mila Tree. She is confined there.

Then we have our plan. Let's get to it!
