Paralogue 10: Ambivalence

Seal Time

Yarne promotes to Sniper, gaining beefy stats across the board and already knocking on the 30 strength mark. Snipers are basically just stronger Archers with a bit of extra movement.

Chrom gets a horse out of nowhere and becomes a Paladin, losing some melee stats but gains better resistance, movement, and for some reason gains a point of magic.

Owain loses out what little defense he had, but gains extras strength and skill in return. The Assassin has weaker skills than a Swordmaster, but is a better fighting unit with stronger pair-up bonuses for another strength character. Owain also learns to wield bows.

Cordelia's paralogue is located on the southwest edge of the 1st continent, which is available once she gains an S rank.

S Conversation: ...Oy, THIS is real deal? You propose to Gregor?!

Their leader is a former Valmese general! We'll be crushed if we resist...

What's that about Valm?

Who are you?

My name is Chrom.

The ruler of Ylisse?!

Elder! He may be able to help us!

Um, I can hear you. But tell me your problem, and I'll see what I can do.

Oh, thank you, sir!

(Meanwhile, inside the fortress)

Urgent news, sir! Armed soldiers approach! Their leader claims to be Chrom of Ylisse!

Dammit! Why would he come here? Well, if they insist on dogging me, I've got hounds of my own to welcome them with.

No, only a stray mutt that refuses to stop yapping. But you'll be a good dog and do as I say if you ever want—

Yes, yes, if I ever want to see it again. I'm well aware.

I trust you're equally aware of your position, Holland?

......

Loquacious as ever, I see. You'll fight for me, or I'll have that lazy tongue pried from your head. Now, then. Chrom may have the Fire Emblem in his possession... And if I claim that, I've practically claimed the throne. So go out there, kill anything that moves, and get me that Emblem!

Nelson's fortress has a huge number of Bersekers and Assassins roaming around the map. Some of the enemies are knocking on 30 speed, which is faster than the majority of the Shepherds.

Nelson has the critical-boosting Focus and Tomefaire, which gives +5 magic when a tome is equipped.

Holland is decently tough, but really his stats might as well be zero. Don't kill him, he won't come after us.

Severa starts out on the right side of the fortress entrance. Severa's the first kid since Owain to have two strong parents as it shows for her base stats. She starts out as a Mercenary and inherits Speed+2 and Gamble since consistent +10 crit is more reliable than the risky Wrath.

Tiki and Olivia join the cast of regulars for the uprising against Nelson. Owain gets a Bronze Bow to build up his WEXP, while Brady is lock and loaded with tons of range Staves.

Let's reclaim what's been stolen and return it to the villagers.

All this grief over something so small... Once I get what I came for, I'm out of here.

Maybe I can convince Holland to come with me.

Brady Rescues Severa right off the bat so Cordelia can recruit her.

Have we met? If so, I'm afraid I've quite forgotten.

Well, excuse me for being so forgettable!

Look, there's no time for this. If you're a friend, speak now. If not, then stay out of Chrom's way or I'll have to cut you down.

Chrom, Chrom, Chrom! It's ALWAYS Chrom with you!

...I'm sorry?

You should be! And I don't care about your stupid Chrom, so you can just drop it! ...I only want to talk to Holland.

Holland?

Yes, Holland! That sad sack over there. Watch my back so I can get to him safely, and then I'll help your stupid army!

O...okay?

Oh, and Holland's not here of his own will, so don't you dare hurt him!

Okay, so Severa's recruitment has some...complications. She has to talk to Holland in order to be recruited, and there's about a dozen promoted units between her and the pot-helmet. She will continuously run into her death, so to really save a lot of hardship, just have a Healer with a stack of Rescue Staves to keep her in place.

If Chrom talks to Severa

What's a child doing here?

Child? I'm not a child, you oaf! I'm... Wait, are you the enemy general?

I don't know. Are we enemies?

You're Chrom, aren't you? You're Lucina's father.

That's right. ...And I suppose you came back here with my daughter?

Oh, good. Now I won't have to waste time explaining the situation. ...Weird. I didn't think you'd be quite so funny looking.

You're a real charmer. But charm or not, if you can fight, you're welcome to join our cause.

Not the snappiest pick-up line I've heard, but I suppose it gets the job done. But I can't leave until I reclaim my property from Nelson. We'll talk then.

Actually, we're here to take stolen goods back to the village. If I promise to add yours to the list, will that persuade you?

Mmm... Maybe. But you'll have to help my friend Holland, too. He's a bit of a sad sack, but he doesn't want to be here either.

Will he listen to reason?

He will if I talk to him. He listens to pretty much whatever I say. Don't worry, he hates Nelson, too. Just be sure not to hurt him.

We'll be careful.

Lucina supports Tiki and Henry supports Owain as they get in range of the enemy forces. The rest of the team gather behind them.

Tiki blasts the first Berserker victim in his face.

Owain shows how great this map is for Bow users getting as much combat as possible on the enemy phase by hugging the walls. Most enemies around this point of the game have and will prefer using their two-range weapons and since Assassins usually wield bows, Snipers like Yarne can get a lot more EXP than usual with the right placement.

Tiki continues her domination at stats, even gaining some resistance to be the best tome killer in the land.

Cordy eliminates the 2nd Berserker in the area, then Tiki via Olivia runs up to bait out more Assassins.

The team continues to roam around the edges of the enemy range. 4 enemy reinforcements arrive, with two appearing near Nelson.

Tiki and Owain take on the eager Assassins, with Owain getting a bow counterkill since he was on the edge of the range and forces the enemy to use their own bow.

Tiki continues to spearhead the assault. Yarne takes out the weakened foe.

A Sage dies from too much fire in the face. Owain counter-snipes a Trickster trying to strike with a Levin Sword.

Severa, get back here.

The newly weds continue on their own to the left side's mass of enemies, while Owain continues to tinker with his bow.

Yarne clips the head of another target and gets a Master Key from the body. Tiki chips an Assassin as she places herself to block half of the middle entrance.

Cynthia finishes off the target before Brady Rescues her as usual.

Chrom takes the other half of the entrance with Lucina's support. Another set of 4 enemies spawn from the same places.

Shameful Berserker can't even get 30% hit in a weapon triangle advantage.

Still growing strong.

Gregor takes out a couple enemies, with Cordy gaining a level off a Dual Strike. She learns Sol.

Just reach 20, that's all I'm asking. Don't be like your mother.

Tiki continues to be an absolute wall-wrecker, though she could stand to gain a little more defense despite the Dragonstone+ bonuses.

Chrom and Owain gets a little breathing room going for the team.

Hmm, sometimes I think Henry wants to switch back to a tome caster.

After Brady Rescues Cynthia, Yarne moves forward and gets Lucy's help to gain enough speed to double and kill.

I just noticed Brady as almost as much strength as Cynthia. That's terrible.

Gregor's been getting a bit of a luck streak lately, which is good news for his Armsthrift.

Olivia gains a level after dancing to Brady Rescuing Severa. Special Dance gives +2 Strength/Magic/Defence/Resistance to any unit she dances to, which gives more reason to take Olivia over another combat unit to further stack stats.

Tiki plans to bait out the western enemy forces as Cordy hangs back to prevent getting overwhelmed.

Ah, memories of a Manakete taking on half the army without a care in the world.

40 skill now for Owain, not including bonuses from his father or Rally Spectrum.

Chip damage leads to a level for Tiki. Not being doubled by Assassins naturally is quite a feat for anybody, so her stats are more than great.

Looooong range. Cordy takes out a Zerker easily.

Chrom and Cynthia clear the Tricksters that went after Tiki.

Brady gains another level after Physic, now 1 strength behind Cynthia. Embarrassing all around.

After Owain snipes another enemy unit, the rest of the team gather around the middle area. There's no more reinforcements until Severa talks to Holland.

Well, that sucks but I guess that's regressing to the mean after his whole resume being good levels.

Lucy and Cynthia get busy with some killing.

Owain clears the last enemy on the east side. Cordy and Gregor continue to take on the west side by themselves.

Cynthia Rescues Severa and gains disappointment. Come on, Brady's on your heels!

The Shepherds form a wall to block the 4 stairs in the middle area as Severa talks to Holland.

Severa! What are you doing here? If he knows you left your post...

I'm leaving, Holland, and you're coming with me.

Severa, I... I can't. You know I can't. I have a wife. If I don't earn Nelson's coin, she'll starve. I know it's blood money, but—

Your wife is PREGNANT, Holland! You know that, don't you?!

Of course I know that! And it's none of your concern!

Do you love your child, Holland? Do you love your wife?

Of course I do!

Then stop making excuses! I know that parents will do anything for their children... But I also know how it feels when a child loses her parents.

This world's got far too many kids who've gone through that. If you stay, you'll be killed or worse. And your child deserves better!

Severa, I...I'm sorry. I didn't know. That must have been hard for you. ......

You're right. My child deserves better. Let's get out of here.

Really?!

Yes, really. But we have to hurry!

Holland disappears and Severa finally becomes our ally.

If Holland is killed

Holland, no! You idiot! Now you'll never get to see your wife again or meet your new child...

I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Families never stay together...

And she becomes an enemy unit that you have to kill. Annoying.

After Brady Rescues Severa, the turn ends and the last reinforcements pop up in the middle stairs.

Tiki and Chrom wipe out their targets, the latter gaining C lances.

Hmm. Well, okay then.

Already got more kills than a quarter of the army.

Treasure chests for the map.

Levels while the party makes it to Nelson.

Nelson and his look-alikes really need to learn what a bath is. So unkempt.

You've got to be loyal before you can be a traitor, you idiot! And you're one to talk, extorting a poor, innocent girl like me... It's time you learned just how deadly this innocent girl can be!

Did you seriously think owning the Fire Emblem would just automatically make you the ruler? You suck, Nelson.

I'm sure it is. Nelson drops a Talisman to end the mission.

If Chrom battles Nelson

Damn... Useless fools, all of you!

And what does that make the man cowering behind them?

Bah! I'll use your corpse to clean the blood from my boots!

(After the mission)

Is that a ring?

It's MY ring, and I'll thank you to stop staring so lustily at it! It's worth more then anything in the world to me... That rat Nelson stole it one night while I was sleeping.

Well, I'm glad you were able to get it back.

...Hmph.

Wh-what do you want?!

Just to thank you for helping us. You fought bravely, er...

Severa. ...My name's Severa.

It suits you somehow. Oh, and my name—

Cordelia. I know.

Er, yes, that's... But how did you...? I'm sorry, did I introduce myself before?

I guess you must have if I know your name. Gods...

I...I see. Well, thank you all the same, Severa.

You already said that! And besides, it's not like I did anything special.

I was just fighting to get back what's rightfully mine.

Are you referring to that ring? Oh, goodness. It looks exactly like...

Ah, I see. That would explain how you know my name. You're a friend of Lucina's, aren't you? ...And you're my child. Isn't that right?

*Mutter* *grumble* ...lonely...

What was that?

I SAID, I thought you'd be lonely, so I came here to see you! ...You're welcome.

That's very sweet.

D-don't mock me! You don't care! You don't care at all...

How could you possibly think that? I'm thrilled beyond words to meet you.

...Then why'd you leave me? You said you had to go off to fight for what really mattered, and you never came back!

You picked Chrom over me!

You have me at a disadvantage, Severa. I can't answer for my future self. But when I said I was fighting for what mattered, I probably meant you. I'd want nothing more than to build a world where you could grow up happy and strong.

At least, that's what I want right now.

You think I don't know that...? I mean, I DO know that, but...

I'm sorry I wasn't a better mother to you.

Well, you're still MY mother, which makes you the best mother in the world.

And the luckiest, it seems.

Oh, Mom, I missed you so much! I...I'm sorry I was so mean... I just... I didn't want to lose you again... Promise you won't leave, okay? Promise!

Severa starts out strong thanks to her parents being regular combatants, to the point of being able to get in combat right away without babysitting like Cynthia. She doesn't get as much class variety with Gregor as her father, but she gets most of everything she needs anyway from Cordy. A Mercenary has yet to disappoint for the Shepherds.

Official Bio: Cordelia's future daughter. Growing up in the shadow of her mother has given her an inferiority complex and an attitude to match. She likes using words to get her way. The most wasteful shopper.
