Front Mission Evolved

Part 1: Front Mission Evolved Concept art

Yep, not sure why they felt the need for throwing away all these forces just to fire a single rocket launcher. They could have sneaked in quietly and blow the damn thing up. Way easier and they would still have most of their forces intact.

So time for some concept art!

We're going to start the discussion with a look at Studio Hive's work. If you're bored have a poke around their portfolio, their art is fantastic! They even have an entire Gallery for Front Mission Evolved and I love their vision of the game. So it's a good place to start! Also check out the gallery for much larger versions of the concept art we're going to discuss. We're going to be doing five pieces at a time.

*Disclaimer - I'm going to be writing like I know what I'm talking about. I do not. Feel free to add your own interpretations or correct mine *

Upwards shot of Zephyr

So here we see someone who I'm pretty sure is Dylan Ramsy, staring up at his signature Wanzer, the sense of scale is pretty good. The Wanzer seems much bigger then it is in the games. In between its legs we can see some orange coated workers, probably mechanics. Working on another Wanzer off in the distance while overhead helicopters are seen mobilizing. The Zephyr also seems to have something on it's back, I believe it's an early version of the A.G.I.L.I.T.Y backpack. In the Zephyr concept art I've found there's a version of the backpack that matches up with it pretty well.

I get the feeling this would be just after Dylan joined the military and was heading out to Huffman Island. I like it but it's not my favourite of the concepts.

Diorama #1

This is an interesting piece. Dylan is in the centre of all this, surrounded by the rest of the artwork and yet standing alone. In the background above Dylan's head we see the orbital elevator. The other characters only seem to exist in the background, just elements to the almost smoke like tear in the background. We see a tiny Cornelius Werner there, interestingly, in all his concept art he's shown with a gun, and I don't think we ever meet him outside his wanzer. I'm assuming they had other plans for him. The picture is also kind of dominated by the Zephyr head in the upper left, I'm guessing it's supposed to represent EDGE, although it could just represent robots.

I don't know what's going on.

My best guess for this one is it's concept art for the garage. The blue squares are the only thing that makes me think that. Visually it's interesting but I haven't the slightest clue what it is.

This is more like it!

Here we see the O.C.U war effort. Leading a charge against some unseen aggressor. Both a joint Infantry and Armour Assault. We can see the O.C.U logo on the left hand shoulder of the closest Wanzer. The soldiers look much more like modern soldiers, one's even throwing a grenade! We can see in the background a Wanzer exploding. There's a sense of speed and movement to the image which I just love. It gives me a sense of the game they wanted this to be. It's just a shame they gave it to a company that couldn't pull it off.

Are we in a movie poster now?

This could either be a movie poster or a novel cover, it's got all those elements for it. Also the plate on Dylan's chest reads: Dylan Ramsy, UCS Army, Wanzer Squad, Unit something. Just in case Dylan forgets what the fuck he's doing I suppose?
