Part 51: Garlyle Base 3

Looks like this is the place. The save point's hint is...

Huh. This save point has no hint.

The kid's happy to see us again, and once again offers the nut.

: Three nuts...? He tried to give them to use before. Is he telling us to eat them?

: Well, maybe.... They don't look poisoned.

It's been far too long since someone's said something stupid.

: Aha ha ha ha. Justin, you're so melodramatic.

: But as you said, Justin, everyone eat it together. ♥ OK. Let's eat on the count of three. One!

: Two!

: Three!

Oh dear.

Even the humanoid kid knows to back the fuck away from faces like that.

(I cannot believe I got that under 2 megs without absolutely murdering the colors and/or framerate. Damn)

I'm not even gonna pretend to transcribe that.

Hmm, something seems... different.

: Did it taste that bad...?!

: OF COURSE! What are you trying to feed US! You nincompoop!

: Whoa! I'm sorry! But I'm no Nincompoop.

: My name is Rem!

Finally, we have a name for the kid.

: What? Now that you mention it....

: It's true! I can understand him, too!

Oh god, here we "go" with the "random quote marks".

: Amazing! Well, we have a lot to talk about!

: Now we have to escape! Let's look for a way out!

Well, there's only one way to go...

Crap.

: Aaaah! And you even brought that humanoid child along!

: My, my. You saved me the trouble of finding you.

Oh, truly we are slain beneath the rapier wit of Saki.

: My, my, the humanoid child.... You! You'll never get away alive!

(I've also tried putting my random comments as annotations in the video, for the curious.)

As always, skip down to "fight ends" to skip the battle.

And so we start off with a boss fight.

Saki is a big pile of HP, and all her moves only target one ally. The strategy is go just go nuts on her Privates with AoE attacks.

... Suddenly it occurs to me that I should have worded that better.

Here we see Power Lariat, a.k.a. "Punch you in the face attack". Her other technique involves a savage beating with a paper fan. Thankfully, though, Justin was at full health, because Saki can hurt.

After not too long, though, the fight ends.

That seems helpful.

: Hey! I've found something here! We can open a lot of doors with this!

The base's layout is fairly straightforward. A lot of rooms attached to one central hallway.

Justin decides to start beating these guys with their own equipment.

Also, there are no random encounters. Each room has a group of soldiers, and there's no way to respawn them. They're worth decent EXP and gold, but I mostly use them to replenish SP between the boss fights.

Raise your hand if you were surprised by this. Anyone?

: But we are not finished with you yet.

: Now you'll be the victims of my splendid moves! Oh ho ho!

Nana has less health than Saki, but her moves all hit an area.

Also, she attacks with a bladed yo-yo.

Even Justin can shrug off the damage, though.

During the battle, Sue hits Water 3. Sue's been wanting to hit Water 3. Shortly after she learns this pile of skills, the fight ends.

No AGI this level? Feena, you're sli-pph, who cares about AGI? +3 STR is always helpful.

Heading up the stairs...

A little late for that, Justin.

: Justiiin!? What do we do?

: Anyway, let's look for a way out!

Still no random encounters, although we do find a Miracle Drink (restore 5 MP for all levels for the party), which we drink immediately, and a set of darts for Sue. And then, at the end...

: NOW we have a problem. According to my plans, you three are scheduled for execution tomorrow.

: I'll change the plan. I'll carry out the sentence right now! ♥

Before we get to the fight, though, the save point's hint is that magic levels also boost stats.

Same deal. Mio is the weakest of the three, and, following the pattern, she should have full-screen attacks.

In the meantime, though, Sue shows off Yawn. She literally squeezes sleeping gas out of Puffy. Speaking of gas....

: Well now, DIE from this nerve gas!

The area of effect of this attack is odd. The balloons move out in a shallow spiral and pop when they hit a character. If someone happens to be standing in a spot where they don't get hit by a balloon, say by using someone else as a shield, they'll avoid the attack.

And yes, Mio attacks by filling fucking balloons with nerve gas and releasing them against children. I guess she was voted "Most likely to stand trial for war crimes" in training.

The balloons cause both poison and sleep. It's a pretty nasty attack.

Her other technique is to dual-wield stun guns, paralyzing a single character and causing a decent chunk of damage.

Cure, our first Forest spell, cures poison. Sue learned that shit just in time.

Snooze puts all enemies to sleep. It makes water XP a lot easier to build up.

All in all, once you deal with her tricks and can focus damage on her, Mio goes down quickly. Sue and Feena are still poisoned once the fight ends, though.

We find another set of downward stairs further on.

Oh hell yes.

: Great! We'll escape on this!

: Wonderful, Justin! Can you drive it?

: Sure... well, actually... I've never done it! But we'll figure it out!

: OK. I've got it! This is it!
