Part 13: The Sebucus Islands

Update 13: The Sebucus Islands

Music: The World Map

Well, here's my sad but more or less accurate rendition of the Sebucus Islands. There's quite a bit to do here, and the game will actually let us go just about anywhere right from the get go, though the enemies still scale in difficulty to let us know what the “correct” path is.

(the “correct” path is stupidly hard and I'm glad you guys voted for me not to do it).

We've got new enemies, but the theme of battles hasn't really changed. Noa can kill any of these fools with a Tempest Break, so it's just a matter of Spiriting up, aiming her at the most dangerous enemy, and having Vahn and Gala on cleanup duty. The Killer Bison is pretty nasty and can dish out a good hundred damage or so.

Sadly, the Lip Kids can outspeed Noa on occasion, so that's all the more chances we'll get to see this.

This is the peaceful town of Vidna. Of the four towns available, it's the only one that's safe, free of Mist and any form of danger, all thanks to its windmills.

Music: Town Theme

This guy will give you “tours” (which is to say he'll deliver a tour guide spiel without actually taking you to the places he's describing) for 100G a pop.

I'd like to welcome you all to Vidna. Enjoy your stay! As you know, Vidna has a lot of geothermal energy. It's a town of hot springs and windmills. 138 years ago, Mayor Molina saw the value of this geothermal energy, and developed a tourism industry based on the area's natural beauty. Vidna became famous as a paradise on earth that everyone wanted to visit. People came from all over Legaia for the hot springs. In fact, Vidna's slogan was: “Just as Vidna's underground heat will keep the windmills turning, and the hot springs hot forever, no love borne here will ever die.” In other words, they thought that Vidna's prosperity would last forever.

That's a stupid slogan.

Ladies and gentlemen, here we are, the eternal city of Octam! Octam, situated north of Vidna (author's note: These directions are total bullshit), was once a hub of flying wagon transport. It's also famous for the Temple of Rem, which is dedicated to Rem, the god of fate. Here, flying wagons travel overhead and the Temple of Rem sleeps deep underground. Octam is also famous for Hari, the living god of the Temple of Rem. You know the saying “See Octam and die”, right? Well, I'm sure anyone could die happy once they've heard the prophecy of Hari.

That's a stupid saying.

This isn't really a tour, so I'll keep it brief. Hari is said to be the living god of the Temple of Rem. Some say he's 1000 or even 2000 years old. Frankly, I have trouble believing a human could live that long. They also say that Hari only appears before the temple priestess and the Mayor of Octam. But if you ask me, I doubt Hari even exists. But if Hari is really a divine prophet...he could at least tell me if I'll ever get work as a tour guide again.

Okay, that's enough out of you. Let's explore Vidna a little.

This lady can tell us a little more about Octam, but all she really has to say is that they are famous for flying wagons that could take people to Karisto Kingdom. I guess that's how we'll be leaving once we wrap up this area?

If you examine the fishing tackle set and then talk to the man, he'll let you take it. Now we can play the fishing minigame! I...think I'm excited?

A few of the townsfolk will complain about this Danpas person. He seems to be the town outcast, so we should talk to him and see what his deal is. He can be found in a bunker underneath his home to the left of Vahn.

The townspeople don't realize how horrible the Mist is. What would happen if for some reason the windmills stopped? The Mist would swallow us all. We'd all be eaten by the Seru, or possessed by them. That's why I'm preparing for when that happens. I built an underground shelter. And what do the townspeople do? They treat me like a lunatic. Fools. Fools! They're all fools! You seem to know what's going on, so if the Mist ever comes, you can hide in here. For you fellows, I'll have an especially good hiding place.

I don't know how necessary this is, but it seems like a reasonable precaution. There are all sorts of reasons the windmills could stop working, after all.

Gala, what's wrong? I thought the Biron people were your friends.

It's just that I've violated the teachings of Biron by wearing Ozma.

What's the matter, Gala? Zopu forgave you! Then why? Vahn, say something to Gala.

They'll understand if you explain.

Gala, Vahn is right! And what's more Ozma isn't a Seru. He's a Ra-Seru. So you didn't do anything wrong!

That's right! A Ra-Seru isn't the same thing as a Seru.

Sashia: Oh, Hari, your prophecy has come true!

And you are?

Sashia: Allow me to introduce myself. I am called Sashia.

Sashia, are you a friend of Hari's?

Sashia: Not really a friend...I serve Hari. I am a priestess at the Temple of Rem. Before the Mist came, Hari instructed me to go to Vidna. I was to wait for three youths wearing Ra-Seru and give them The Message.

Hari knew that we would come here?

Wow! That Hari is amazing! Where is he? I want to meet him!

Sashia: I am sure that Hari awaits your visit, too. I shall now give you The Message, as instructed by Hari. Go to the Temple of Rem! See the four books of Prophecy! When you have seen them all, the secret will be clear! A brave Ra-Seru will acquire a great key, the Star Pearl!

Four Books of Prophecy? Star Pearl? What is this, a riddle?

Sashia: Hari said that with this, the youths wearing Ra-Seru would find a way. The Temple of Rem is in Octam. Good luck to you all.

Well, that was, um, enlightening. I hope we'll be able to make some sort of sense out of that later, but for now I think we should keep exploring.

Here we have a fellow who will hand us coins. These are different from G – they are for use at casinos and some other minigame events. We'll have an ordeal with these later, but for now, I figure I'll play a game of slots just to say I did. I mean, slots are a total sucker's bet and I foresee only ruin, but -

Huh?

holy shit I have over 100x coins now gambling is AWESOME

Here are Vidna's famed Hot Springs. For some reason I thought there was an item hiding out in here, but I couldn't find anything. I'm almost sure I'm missing something...

Hey, it's a named NPC. He's probably important, but we have no idea why right now. Maybe he's just like that other named dude back in Rim Elm. What was his name again? Sixes?

If you didn't realize we're supposed to come here later, the prices of equipment are here to remind you. Also there's nothing here for Noa (almost all of it is Vahn stuff) so I have to trek back to the cave to get her newest stuff.

This is the Machina Room, where the hot water is converted to energy for the windmills or something. There are treasures in the water, but it's too hot to enter.

Music: fishin'

Hey, so, fishing. Um, I've never ever done this before so I don't really get it, but I caught some fish so I am excited!

The basic gist is that you cast the line and when a fish bites you start reeling the line in, but you have to pay attention to the Tension meter and stop reeling when it gets too high, otherwise the line will break. That's about all there is to it that I can tell, but I understand there's water deeepness levels and different lures and stuff. It actually seems pretty complicated and sort of interesting, so I'm curious to learn more about it, but for now let's just have some pictures of fish.

Oh yeah, there are prizes for fishing. Some of them are kinda pricey...I don't know if I'll be able to afford these for a while.

There are also SECRET prizes that only appear once you have enough points to get them. One of them is an LP mandate, so I'll be fishing a lot.

Northwest of Vidna we find this sign at an intersection. Let's head to this Ratayu place, it sounds like a town with maybe a tree or something worthwhile.

Music: Mist Covered Town

Vahn! Over here! There's a town here! Wow!...No, Vahn! There's thick smoke coming out! It's too hot! We can't go there!

It's superheated steam! It's too hot to jump over.

Vahn! I don't like this place! I want to leave here!

Well, this was a bust. Let's get out of here.

By the way, the enemies around Ratayu are newer and even meaner. I suspect we won't be coming back for quite a while. It makes for good grinding if you want to get that Vidna equipment, though.

And here we have the Gate of Shadows, the last stop on our tour of Sebucus Islands for now.

Music: Octam in the Mist

Who are you?

Gi Delilas, at your service! That Zeto is pretty pitiful to let a bunch of brats like you defeat him!

You! That Seru you're wearing!

Is this a bad person, lie Songi and Zeto?

A “bad person”? Oh, brother.

I really had no idea what to pick here so I did that thing where I held up and pressed confirm at random. It chose Vahn.

Ah, I knew it. Well, Vahn! Let's see how good you are! Fight me one on one!

Hey! How come you want to fight just Vahn and not me?

One-on-one combat is a Delilas family tradition. I'll fight you later. Well, Vahn? Don't run away. Fight me!

Bring it on!

Most admirable. Now prepare yourself!

???: Ah! Older brother!

Older Brother...(whisper)...Nivora...Kuro...

...I see. All right, I'll be right there!

What are you whispering about there? Who are you?

Yes, his eye sparkles. Really.

You want to know our names? Ha ha! Very well!

I'm Gi Delilas, expert at delivering a fatal blow to an opponent's body!

I am Lu Delilas! I strike with lightning speed!

I am Che Delilas! Brute strength and chaos are what I am about!

That was...I mean, I don't know if I should cower in fear or laugh my ass off.

Vahn, I thought we could play together, but now I don't have the time. I'll let you live for now! But the next time I see you, I'll have your life!

The three disappear in a puff of smoke...

Heh, Noa thinks we need a team pose, too.

At any rate, there are four shields and this huge stone flower thing, but we can't seem to do anything with anything. Oh well, I guess we'll just have to keep this place in mind for later.

Join me next time as I go to Octam and unveil it's secrets!...or try, anyway.

Mother: Dear...can you feel it? It's Noa! I feel Noa's presence.

Father: So warm...Such a pure heart. She's growing up healthily.

Mother: She seems to have made some wonderful friends.

Who is it? Who's there?

Father: Noa, can you hear me? It's me...Your father...

My father? Father! Is it you, Father? Is Mother there, too?

Father: Yes. Both of us are watching over you, Noa!

I...I want to see you, Father I want to see Mother, too!

Father: And we want to see you...but...

Mother: We are trapped in eternal darkness.

Father: All we can do...is send you our words...through your pure heard, in your dreams...It pains me to send you...our words...like this...

Father!

Mother: Mother...wants to see you, too...Noa...We're...waiting for you...

I'm coming. I'll go to where the deepest Mist is to see you!
