Lufia and the Fortress of Doom

by Blackbelt Bobman

Part 17

I dare say, another update?! It's like I'm doing on every day or something!

WHEN WE LAST LEFT OUR HEROES, we were looking for Raile Shaia at the Tower of Grief. What a name!

I have to pass through this damn cave to get there, it better be a short cave!

Huh, it was literally one room. Took me about a minute to get through. Good times. Hey, a tower!

Man being here is making me all teary eyed. . .

5/8 I can't wait to get my wishes granted for finding these eggs! I'm going to wish for no more fetch quests!

These guys are kind of pointless, since they just use Hi Arrows like the archers, but hi arrows is an item so it does the same damage as it did when the archers used it, but now that isn't really such a big deal.

So, so far I have blue, red, green, yellow, and purple rings. They all do different things, too.

There are healing tiles here, but it's kind of pointless because I don't fight a boss, maybe they should put these, you know, before boss fights.

You certainly are a flake, you're not even in your own damn village!

Wow, you can tell?

Yes, your energy is very strong.

You can see through Mixam's character! People are always more than they appear to be!

Uh, yeah, so which one of you removed the barrier to the village?

I did.

Wow you must have great power to be able to do that! Come over here. Yes, you have much potential. I will help draw out that potential. AWAKE! I CALL UPON THOSE POWERS YET UNTOUCHED! IT'S ME, FLAKE, WHAT'S GOIN ON?

That isn't really much of a power boost, now, if her INT went up ten, THAT would be awesome.

Wow, her magic increased simply by those words!

Nah it has always been there, I simply drew it out.

I had no idea I had all this dormant power inside me.

Look guys, this is exciting and all, but we really came here looking for Raile Shaia.

Oh yeah you just missed him, he went back to his lab.

No one is ever where they should be in this game. Seriously. Okay, a hop and a skip later. . .

FINALLY, IT'S REALLY HIM! He is kinda ugly, look at that comb over.

Who are you? You don't look like one of my lab students.

I'm Mixam and these are my compatriots Lufia, Aguro, and Jerin. Are you Raile Shaia?

I am indeed, the great, amazing, super genius Raile Shaia. You don't believe me, do you? Look, if I give you this potion you'll grow two more arms! Double your attack power.

Uh, no thanks.

What about you, little girl? With this potion your hair will grow longer!

Hey that sounds nice

No way in hell am I letting you do that?

Why, afraid my hair will look better than yours?

No way, my hair will ALWAYS look better, right Mixam?

I don't know, I've never really thought about it.

Where are your eyes, anyway?

I'm not always looking at your hair?

I have no idea what the hell is going on right now

Look, we came here for a ship that can go underwater.

Ah, you mean the Falcon! My most genius invention!

Can it really travel underwater?

It can even fly! It's the basement, let's go check it out!

It better not be a piece of crap, or I'll be pissed!

It's covered in dust!

And the wings are chipped!

There's a hole in the deck!

You've never actually used it before, have you?

What? How did you know? But this is a perfect time! How would you like a demonstration?

No way in hell I'm going into that death trap!

We need it to get the Dual Blade, let's just do it.

What are you waiting for come on!!!!!

syduck:

I actually have a horrible fear of drowning, and being in a submarine makes me claustrophobic. I've only been in docked ones on the harbor, but jesus I still feel like I'm going to die. And this submarine apparently has holes in it

If there's one thing that can be said about this game, it's that the underwater environments look amazingly cool.

The water pressure should have killed them by now, but who am I to argue video game phsyics?

Only a slight problem, of course. Not a gigantic problem like a big fucking hole in it.

Underwater navigation is impossible. You can still navigate on the surface, though. I can't fix it here, though, all my tools are at Shaia Lab #3, which is directly west of here. KAY MEET YOU THERE!

I think he just ran away.

He's certainly special!

What a weird guy.

I like him!

. . .

. . .

. . .

Well anyway, we should go to Shaia Lab #3.

Hey guys, I now have a boat! It only took half the game to get one! YIPPE!

And when I warp, the boat comes with me! How convenient! Before I travel to Shaia Lab #3, there's one extra place I can go:

The Isle of Forfeit, which is north of Surignal(?), the desert town after Belgen. I can never remember how to spell it. Anyway, any item you've ever sold ends up here for some strange reason. You can also trade a long nail and a straw doll for a Gloom Voice, which attempts to instantly kill all enemies. And there's a shop that, if you enter, won't let you leave until you buy something. It's pretty annoying. Other than that, there isn't anything special here except one accessory I found:

Which gives you +30 INT(!) and like +20 MGR, which is pretty amazing. INT is intelligence which raises magic damage (duh) and MGR is Magic Resistance.

And, while sailing, you can fight random encounters, which is pretty annoying, let me tell you! Although the encounter rate is a little lower for boat travel. Let's look at some of the enemies!

Red Star and Killer Eel. Yeah, not very creative.

Lufia learned Boost, the second best healing spell in the game. It basically casts stronger on your whole party, and costs less MP than two casts of stronger. It's pretty amazing. Mixam also learned Champion, which fully heals one character, which is pretty good.

That clam looks like it's about to go apeshit on you, seriously. Psychoclam. This game has some of the best enemy names ever. And the lobster is Lobsteron. Not very exciting.

Anyway, off to Shaia Lab #3! . . . actually, I just realized I'm on level 27, which means I've been able to go to a new Old Cave floor for two levels! Let's go check it out!

NEW ENEMIES UP IN HERE!

No idea on this one. Trap Harp? Okay. They have huge HP, and a huge sprite too. The other guy is an Axe knight, like all metal clad enemies he takes massive damage from flash-type spells. They can do pretty good damage.

This strengthens Lufia's Explosion-type spells, whatever they're called, bang or blast or boom I don't know. I barely use them because her flash spells are so powerful. I mean, the blast spells hit all enemies, but are pretty weak. Flash is her best spell.

Easy shit. Alright, back to finding Shaia Lab #3. Sailing west from Shaia Lab #1. . .

A random island with nothing on it!

Ah, here we are. It's on an island in the middle of the ocean

Sniffing oil is the equivalent to resting for the night, free HP/MP restoration!

There's a priest here too, for some reason.

I know you just arrived, but could I send you on a fetch quest? Go find a man named Cooper, he's my #1 assistant.

Go and get him yourself!

Aguro! Sorry professor, he's a good guy, but sometimes he behaves badly.

His mind is worse!

What?!

If you two don't behave, I'm turning this car around!

So you wants us to find Cooper?

Yeah, he's in Bakku, which is directly west of here. He should be in the cleric's hut.

Who saw this one coming? Let's sail to Bakku!

Another random island. Bakku is just past it, though.

Here we are. Bakku! Isn't that the name of the head of the theif guild Tantalus in FFIX?

I should meet him. Too bad Linze is past the Tower of Light, which is north of here, and the key was stolen!

Who the fuck names these towers?

Coop? Yeah, he went to the Old Cave. Said something about finally making it to the fifth level. You'll probably find him there.

This gets a little old after a while.

Off to floor five, again! Let's just skip all the walking and shit and jump straight to cooper.

Are you Cooper?

Who are you? How do you know my name?

Professor Raile sent me to find you.

Raile needs me! Lead the way! I luckily have an Escape here. ESCAPE!

. . .

Aw crap, I think it got damp!

ESCAPE!

He joined my part temporarily tee hee. Okay back to the professor.

Sorry for being gone so long, Professor. What's up?

We need to repair the falcon, it won't go underwater.

It's not ready yet. We need Alumina.

I was afraid you'd say that. Is there any left?

What's Alumina?

A light metal that doesn't rust. The Falcon is made of it.

How much do you need?

Seven pieces should do. There's a cave in the Fargo islands that has some. Ask Brant in Linze about it. Linze is beyond the Tower of Light, north of Bakku. Sorry, I'm sending you on ANOTHER FETCH QUEST.

I knew this was coming, but still. . . god damn. And here we start the Alumina fetch quest! Let's go investigate about this tower of light.

He's on top of the tower, so if you want the key go find him.

Great, this is just lovely. I'd better head north.

Here's the tower. Linze is completely surrounded by mountains, which is why I can't access it by boat. What jerks those programmers are! Let's try and get to the top of this stupid thing.

We just fought this type of enemy, and we already are fighting a recoloring! The other guys are WEREWOLFS, RARGH! They look more like bears, honestly. Angry fucking bears.

Jerin learned Dead? Is that like an instant death spell?

Uh, shouldn't it be called Life then?

TERRORQUIN! And Zooster. The names just get better and better, let me tell you!

The locked door leading to Linze, the whole reason I need this key. I hope this place isn't long! (spoilerz: it is long)

I fell down a hole and landed on a jackpot!

Okay, a bunch of staircases later, I finally reached the top. Even though I jumped from here to the top in the pictures, it was like 20 minutes because of all the encounters.

He's praying to that treasure chest

The Sinistral of Terror, Amon?

Those who interfere have no right to know! RARGH!

This is a weird boss battle. If you use the spell courage, which raises all your allies defense, he uses dread which lowers all your allies defense. But he only uses magic attacks syduck: and if you use protect, which raises all allies MGR, he does nothing. But then, I don't think there's a spell that lowers MGR. Anyway, he was easy, I kicked his ass. The point of this battle is what happens after:

FUCK

Who? What?

????? That mortal was weak! He lacked the will to live. But I have waited long for this moment!

What are you saying?

????? The energy of your battle revived me, earlier than expected.

Who's there? Show yourself!

????? Is that Lufia? Indeed it is! Just as Gades said.

How do you know my name? What's this about Gades?

FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK

THIS IS NOT GOOD! ABANDON SHIP! RUN AWAY!

(The Sinistrals are important characters, and I think each one should have their own emoticon, not just or whatever. So for Amon I will use and for Gades, )

We meet again, little Knight. What's wrong? You don't look happy to see me! Lolz!

And why should our happiness be of any concern to you?

Unchanged, I see. Always wanting to win.

What are you waiting for Mixam? Here's your chance! Destroy them now!

*boom*

Ouch. That stings.

The Great Renunion draws nigh! Even now, our brother Daos awakens!

You'd think being hit by an energy blast from the Sinistrals would kill you, but we're way too fucking tough.

I'm fine

Me too.

Were those really the Sinistrals Amon and Gades?

Yes.

Do we have any hope to defeat them? And they said Daos is being revived too!

We must find the Dual Blade before he does! So we MUST finish this fucking fetch quest for the Alumina!

Well said Mixam!

Now we can get through that door and pass through to Linze!

Finally, geez.

That tree sure is CRAZY!?!

Okay, we're here, let's go find Brant.

THIS ALWAYS HAPPENS WHY DO I EVEN BOTHER GOING TO WHERE PEOPLE TELL ME?!

That's actually pretty convenient. But still,

Next update, I guess I'll check out this cavern and find Brant. Maybe I'll find some Alumina too? STAY TUNED TO FIND OUT!
