The Hollander II of MechCommander occupies a unique place in the history of BattleTech. To under stand this, we must first go back to the Hollander itself. A 35t design, the BZK-F3 Hollander was originally designed to stay at the edge of battle with it's Gauss Rifle, and take sniping shots at the enemy. The fatal flaw of the design was the lack of a backup weapon, let alone one that wasn't ammo dependent. Various solutions were tried, the most common was the -G1 design with replaced the massive weapon with an LB-X AC/10, and two medium lasers.

However, this did not 'fix' the Hollander as the -G1 lost the sniping characteristics of the base chassis. Instead, in 3058, the Coventry Metal Works produced the BZK-F5 Hollander II. This design added 10t to the frame, keeping the same speed, but adding a Medium Laser and an SRM-2 pack to augment the Gauss Rifle.

While all this is interesting, it's not what makes it unique. No, what makes the Hollander II unique is that MechCommander was the first appearance of this BattleMech, and only afterward was it released as a formal Technical Readout. For an only semi-canonical game, that's quite an achievement!

In terms of gameplay though, the Hollander suffers severely from the inability to expand on ammo counts. With only 16 rounds to it's name, the Gauss Rifle will quickly run dry in the many, many, many prolonged engagements this game throws at us.

What it is useful for, however, is what it was intended to do in BattleTech, that being staying at the edge of battle, and throwing accurate shots downrange to soften up or finish off foes. However, once that dries up, the Hollander II becomes an under-gunned Mech that should look for a reloading station or vehicle.

The -J sacrifices armor for higher mobility, a trait that will serve it well in setting up that perfect shot to some poor Mech's back. Long distance will protect it where armor cannot.

For the -W, I couldn't fit the Large Laser in place of the SRM-2 due to weight differences. So I reduced the engine to a 180 (4/6), and improved the armor. This configuration does not reflect the MechCommander Design, but it is the best I can do.
