Part 53: Vengeance Recap

Previously on Myth III

Connacht killed Moagim, ending the war.

There's a lot of good stuff in this level. The boss fight with Moagim is actually pretty well done. Making Moagim teleport away when surrounded by melee was a great idea since it draws out the fight, and makes it feel more rewarding to finally kill him. Just clicking on Moagim with all your units will not win this fight. Not having any kind of sparkley effect on the teleport isn't very forgivable though. The randomized, infinitely spawning Thrall was a great idea, one that should have been used in the first half of the level. Once you know where the Wights come from, you always know where they are. Imagine if the placement of Wights was randomized? That first part would be tense as hell - and maybe a little cheap if the Wights spawned in a bad place.

As I'm writing this I'm thinking about the other boss fights in the series - fights against Balor and The Watcher in Myth: TFL, and against the obvious in Myth 2. Those fights themselves all kind of sucked, it was the levels those fights were in that were cool. Balor and The Watcher both just stood there not doing anything (Balor because he was paralyzed by an Eblis Stone, and The Watcher because he was literally a statue at the time). Without spoiling too much, it's a lot of the same in Myth 2. Is Moagim the best boss fight of the series? I think he is.

Doing this mission with no casualties is possible if you healkill Moagim, but that's just not cool. What I ended up with is about as good as you can do. Six Berserks, one Heron Guard, four Archers and one dwarf (fullTimeLurker) died. The game doesn't count the dwarf since he died during the victory celebration, but I'm going to count his sacrifice anyway.

I had a lot of playthoughs of this level. My threat that I was going to healkill Moagim next time I don't even give a fuck - was honest. I made a good run of this level and killed Moagim the cheap way through healing. I had the video all encoded and ready to upload, but a few days later I thought "eh, one more try" which ended up being the video you all saw. Only two or three times previous have I made a good run ready to post but decided to try one more time. I'm pretty glad I did redo this one, the legit Moagim kill was really satisfying. The second tree snake and the thing where all my dwarves blew up at once were from this failed video. Not having dwarves also meant I couldn't show off the blood on the blackness thing like I wanted to (third screenshot above), which was another reason I redid the video.

Casualty.mp3 is something I've had on my hard drive since the Johnny Law LP, and I've been waiting a long time to find a good place to use it. It's in this update.

Next time on Myth III

Moagim is dead, for good this time. Bahl'al is fleeing for his life, and the armies of the Dark are destroyed. Connacht would breathe easy, but he knows that there must have been a traitor among them this whole time. If The Traitor was ever going to make a move, it would be right now. But who could the Traitor be? Find out in the final episode of Myth III: The Wolf Age!
