I believe that this is an unusually high number of kills for winning LMOTH, even in a fairly long game -- but I'm kind of a newbie, so I could be wrong about that. There were also a lot of deaths on my part, though. Barring some major mistakes, especially where I lost my dwarfs and an archer squad, I obviously could have pulled this victory out with far fewer casualties. (Assuming the same mistakes on my opponents' parts...) In the end I managed to achieve the goal, and that's what counts. The big lessons learned:
- Don't overextend your archers. I've gotten hurt time and again by this one. Single-player experience doesn't count for much here, since compared to the computer opponent, human opponents will usually have faster units and wield them more decisively. There are very few cases where you should actually put your archers any significant distance ahead of your infantry troops; usually they should be even with or behind the infantry. If they are ahead, make sure that the terrain will allow the infantry and archers to easily switch positions when necessary.
- Don't let micromanagement distract you from vulnerable troops of yours elsewhere.
- Splitting your forces is risky. Think twice if you're tempted to engage with only part of your troops.
- Move decisively, and if you move too late, retreat decisively. (And don't throw good troops after bad.)
- Watch your dwarfs! This is one of the Ultimate Laws of Myth, especially when you don't have an established defensive position for them. Those little pyromaniacs are a pain.
- Never attack single-file into a waiting formation. Even if you think you began an attack on a wide front, make sure that terrain (trees, narrow paths) doesn't funnel your troops into disaster.
- Short-line formations are only good if you intend to take a lot of casualties; even then they are poor if you are trying to block a reasonably wide path. Long-line formations are more often the way to go.
- Don't wait too late to get to the flag in LMOTH. It takes longer than you think it will, and moving too late removes attack options.
- Any Myth unit guide will tell you that forest giants are fast, mobile, and very destructive against most units, and that a group of berserks is just about the finest offensive force on the map. This game demonstrates those truths. Generally, large numbers of archers are also very useful, especially on defense, but they require careful management.
If you've played much multiplayer Myth, at this point you're saying, "Well... duh." That's OK. You're next, smart guy.
