Part 229: Junpei Iori

Feinne posted:

So, may I first point out that technically the skill list OFS posted isn't quite right because in P3P Yukari actually gets Diarahan at 52 and not 57

Teaches me to use a FES guide. And I thought they worked the same.

Oh well, since we got our first two party members at the same time, it's time for People with crippling self-worth issues that drive them to shoot themselves to feel useful!

Junpei Iori

And his crazy blade-covered messanger dude, Hermes. Weak to wind, Resistant to Fire, high strength, endurance and HP, terrible magic and SP. Focuses on physical attacks of all three elements and fire spells. He swings his two-handed swords like baseball bats. Nice hat.

Lv 1: Cleave
Lv 4: Agi
Lv 5: Re Patra
Lv 16: Rakukaja
Lv 18: Assault Dive
Lv 20: Double Fang
Lv 25: Kill Rush
Lv 32: Agilao
Lv 38: Marakukaja
Lv 40: Torrent Shot
Lv 45: Counterstrike
Lv 50: Blade of Fury
Lv 55: Gigantic Fist
Lv 58: High Counter
Lv 60: Fire Break
Lv 64: Agidyne
Lv 65: Brave Blade
Lv 74: Vorpal Blade

...Well I say of all three elements, but eventually ends up with two slash skills and one strike, leaving him pierceless. Oh well. Also notice he never gets Maragi's line, so until Blade of Fury at level 50 he never gets the ability to hit multiple targets. Hence is Junpei's issue. Until about 2/3 of the way through the game he cannot hit more than one enemy. He's got Re Patra and defense buffs, but he eventually loses Re Patra. So for most of the game Junpei is kinda meh, though fairly handy against bosses as he can still hit the often lone bosses. Blade of Fury makes Junpei capable of murdering slash-vulnerable random encounters, but it costs 1/6 of his HP a use, and it doesn't do that much for his gameplan.

Until he hits level 74 and is in Great condition.

Then anything that doesn't resist slash will explode violently under the unbelievable damage output of Vorpal Blade scoring endless critical hits. Sure it costs 21% of his HP each use but it costs the enemy even more of theirs to be hit by it. And by that point 5 characters have access to Diarahan. Sweet moped riding Jesus.

So yeah, he's kinda crummy until the end of the game whereupon he gets one really good move but holy shit is it good. Vorpal Blade away shit, use Gigantic Fist if they resist slash, use Agidyne to score knockdowns, conserve HP, and for enemies that resist both slash and strike. Marakukaja for bosses helps too, especially since Junpei is so hard on his HP, what with using Vorpal Blade so much.

He's kinda like Chie from Persona 4, except his terrible period is every level before 50. Ouch. If he got Maragi I wouldn't be so harsh but he literally gets no multitarget skills before Blade of Fury.
