Part 24: 5/15/09

5/15/09

Mitsuru’s worried about us being ready for exams given our… extracurricular activities.

Of course.
Ah, just as I suspected. I’ll be looking forward to seeing your grades…
If they’re good, I’ll give you something. …Consider it a reward.
To be honest, I’m not as well prepared as I should be. I’m still preoccupied with monitoring Shadows.
At any rate, the number of incidents has decreased since our last mission.
If we can continue to defeat them, we may be able to rid the public of their fear…
However, every time a new Shadow appears, it seems to be more powerful than the last.
And even after Akihiko returns to battle, we still won’t be at full strength…

They’re still packing in new topics for the exams.

The bell’s going to ring soon, so make this quick!
In this scene, the family is sitting down to dinner.
Doesn’t it warm your heart?
Now, who wants to answer a question?
Today’s the 15th, so I’ll pick… Aelita.
One of the items on the menu for the family is “pan.” How would you translate this to English?
Bread.
Good job!
“Pan” means “bread” in English.
The term “pan” came from Portugal to Japan a long time ago.
This will be on the next exam, so make sure you got this covered!
We’ve still got a couple minutes left… Oh, in today’s newspaper…

Junpei’s starting to freak out, which he should have done like a week or five ago.

My exams were posted over all the windows!
They were all like 40% and 30%... Actually, that part of the dream is realistic.
Man, I can’t escape exams even in my dreams.

I went down to the book store to see if they had any news on the persimmon tree. They did, and it wasn’t good.

So, would you please cheer up…?
> It seems Mitsuko is crying…
I understand their reasoning…
But… But if… If that tree is gone…
If that tree is removed, I feel like the memory of my son will vanish with it…
> Mitsuko looks upset…
Please stop fighting.
…We’re fine. We’re not fighting. I was just fretting…
Sorry to make you worry.
> Mitsuko seems deeply touched.
…Apparently, the rumor was true… They really are going to cut down the persimmon tree…
So, we went to the school to say goodbye.
But, that just reminded Mitsuko of our son’s death…
> Bunkichi and Mitsuko seem really depressed.

There’s not much more I can do for them other than try to get them to cheer up, unfortunately.

See, dear. That’s exactly what I said!
If you keep crying all the time, then what will your admirers think?
Right, Aelita-chan?
> A smile has returned to Mitsuko’s face.
> You feel Bunkichi and Mitsuko’s great appreciation.
> Your relationship is stronger now!

I wish there was, but what can be done? If their problem could be solved by beating up Shadows I could help, but in the real world I’m just a kid.

> It’s getting dark out.
Stop by anytime.
My wife feels like she’s back in her days in a girls’ high school whenever you’re around.
And of course, I’m always happy to see a looker.
Here, take this for when you get hungry.
> Bunkichi stuffed a Fried Bread into your pocket.
> Obtained Fried Bread.
> After saying goodbye to Bunkichi and Mitsuko, you decided to go back to the dorm.

I don’t know how bread gets so good when it’s fried, but it certainly does.

To do good in a competition or on an exam, you need to practice or study a little every single day.

Junpei doesn’t believe me that I don’t study. I don’t know, I just have a great memory and have never really felt like I need to spend a bunch of time going over things again.

Nope.
Hey, don’t lie.
It’s a proven fact that people who say they don’t study, secretly study their asses off.

Oh, I stopped by the club again and talked to that monk.

I told you not to come back here… Hmph, kids…
Well, I don’t care as long as you don’t get on my nerves. Here, take a seat.
…So, what’re you doin’ here, kid?
I don’t need to tell you.
Ha, you’re absolutely right! It isn’t any of my business!
> The monk seems amused.
…Still, what’s up with the lack of discipline these days, huh? You better watch your mouth, kid.
You think you can just shoot off your mouth ‘cuz you’re a kid?
If you were my kid, I’d give you a swift kick in the ass.
You don’t have to revere me, but at least show me some respect.

Of course, I was really missing some information if I was going to show him the proper respect.

Mutatsu. …That’s my Buddhist name, of course.
> Mutatsu seems to be proud of his name.
And don’t forget to put “san” at the end.
The world’s not a forgiving place, kid. You gotta show other people respect.
> Mutatsu lectured you…
> You felt kindness behind his harsh words.
> You understand Mutatsu better now.

Mutatsu-san is actually not that bad of a guy. Maybe.

> You are getting sleepy…
Well, I don’t really care what happens to somebody else’s kid, but…
…just go home, alright? And don’t ever come back here.
> You decided to go back to the dorm.

I’m sure I’ll figure it out eventually.
