Part 7: Wings and Words (HGSS)

Update 6.5: Wings and Words (HGSS)

Pokémon Center

Hello, today we'll be doing some stuff in the remakes, since we've got plenty to go over. Our first stop is the Pokemon Center, where we have one very interesting NPC.

: I am Primo, the big brother!

We can tell him what we think, so I think there's a few phrases to give him a piece of my mind.

Hell yeah.

"way I am so exciting and fun?"

O-Oh, well, uh, I guess I have something to say to that...

Mmm, I think that sums it up nicely.

: You are no ordinary fan, knowing such a thing! You are a trainer right? I'll pull some strings for you. I think I can swing a deal and give you this Egg. You take good care of it!

Hey, that's pretty nice. But that's not all. If we enter in a few more crazy phrases...

Like so...

We can get a Wooper Egg! Now that's all fine and dandy, but nothing too special, we can catch both of those Pokemon very close by. Let's go crazy.

And get a Slugma Egg. This is very important, since we won't be able to catch one ourselves for a very long time indeed. So when it hatches, we'll have our third team member for this playthrough, though it will take some time to not only hatch, but also train up, so it'll be a while before we can use it. But we're not done just yet.

Some more phrases and...

: Make sure you keep your channel tuned to "The Show Me Show!" And don't forget about me, the big brother!

There are eight new wallpapers we can get through this way. So let me explain: Primo (or Hajime (from fist)) was introduced in Fr/Lg as the guy doing the Teachy TV stuff, but in these games, he appears in Violet City's Pokemon Center to give out stuff to those who go to the Pokemon Daisuki Club's website (or the Filb.de's secret phrase generator like I did) and get secret phrases depending on your trainer ID. This is not the first nor last time the games would ever do this and it's pretty cool you can do this so early.

Violet City

But anyway, it's time to face down the Gym. There really wasn't anything new in Sprout Tower, so let's just move on.

Pokémon Gym

The Gym itself has changed slightly, to fit better with its theme. Otherwise it's still the same.

But soon enough, we're at the leader himself.

: People say you can clip Flying-type Pokémon's wings with a jolt of electricity... I won't allow such insults to bird Pokémon! I'll show you the real power of the magnificent bird Pokémon!

Gym Leader Battle

His team has changed for the better, at least, with much higher levels and a different move to Mud Slap. It might actually be quite a challenge.

Okay, maybe not the Pidgey, but it's kinda tough, I guess?

However, this is the big one. Your team might be just keeping up in levels by this point, even after training at Sprout Tower. Going there is now a must.

And this is the reason why this bird is a dick. Roost heals for 50% damage, while losing your Flying type for the turn, which is pretty terrible since we don't do all that much damage, nor have the Pokemon to take advantage of the loss of the Flying type. So it becomes a real battle of attrition.

But Toto held in there and secured the win. The AI is still a bit braindead early on, so you might get lucky and Falkner will never use the move. Don't bet on it, though. Just keep wearing it down and eventually you'll win.

And that is some moolah, goddamn. We won't have money problems in this game, but I suppose I'm not spending all my cash on Pokeballs.

Pokémon Gym

: Take this official Pokémon League Badge. This one is the Zephyr Badge.

: With that Badge, Pokémon, including traded Pokémon up to Lv. 20, will obey you without question. It also enables you to use the hidden move Rock Smash anytime outside of battle.

: By using a TM, a Pokémon will instantly learn a new move. Think before you act--a TM can be used only once. TM51 contains Roost. It restores half the max HP.

: There are Pokémon Gyms in cities and towns ahead. Make good use of them! As for your next move... I would suggest Azalea Town.

And that's one badge down, aw yeah.

Ruins of Alph

Now we move on to our next destination, the Ruins of Alph. The only differences between the Gym and here were the Mystery Egg being picked up at the Pokemon Mart instead of the Center. I don't get it, but maybe it makes some sense. Oh yeah and some girl in a dress talked to me, but like, whatever.

Puzzle time again! It's a bit different this time around, though.

Instead of doing the entire puzzle, you now only do some of the pieces, but with a twist.

We now have to rotate some pieces. Ooooooooh, challenge.

Hmm, not quite right.

There we go.

: Did you just come down from above...? So! You must have solved the stone-panel puzzle! That is wonderful! You seem to have some talent with archaeology. I will give you this UNOWN Report. It records UNOWN as you capture them. I am sure it'll come in handy!

So instead of the Unown Dex, we now have the Unown Report, which does basically the same thing. So let's see what we can catch.

Same as before, except Hidden Power is exclusively Special, so no more using the Unown's Attack!

Still got these mysterious walls from Crystal, but the puzzles are still the same.

Still need to buy a freakin Escape Rope too...

But at least you aren't teleported out, nor is it removed from your inventory, so we can use it again.

Ooh gorgeous bounty. These are the only items that change, though they are still technically the same. We still get the bitter medicine as our other items.

Mmm, interesting. But that's all we can do for now, so we'll be back later.

These are all of the 10 kinds we can catch for now, same as Crystal. But you can also add pages to the Unown Report when you talk to the scientists as you solve different puzzles. But for whatever reason that wasn't happening for me, guess I need to either do other stuff, or just wait a bit of time. Ah whatever.

But for now, let's move onwards, to Azalea Town.
