The sympathetic branch is one of three divisions of the autonomic nervous system, itself responsible for readying the body's resources for use (often simplified to "fight or flight"). The parasympathetic branch, another division, operates on many of the same organs, stimulating them to rest and digest, accumulating resources for later use. Each operates below the level of consciousness; each enacts baseline functions. The paranormal branch straddles the two, where the conscious and unconscious meet.
